As temperatures in Nagpur have already soared past 42°C, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has officially reactivated its comprehensive summer heat mitigation plan. The centerpiece of this initiative involves the proposed installation of green shade nets at major traffic intersections throughout the city, aiming to shield commuters from the blistering sun.
Proposal Details and Implementation Timeline
The traffic department has submitted a detailed proposal valued at 65.07 lakh rupees, which is scheduled for review by the standing committee on April 17. This strategic move is designed to offer temporary respite to thousands of daily commuters who face prolonged exposure to direct sunlight while waiting at busy traffic junctions across Nagpur.
Historical Context and Previous Installations
Similar green shade net installations were successfully implemented during the summer of 2025 at numerous key locations including Tukdoji Putla Square, Shankar Nagar Square, GPO Square, Akashwani Square, Indora Square, Cotton Market Square, Gandhi Putla Square, and Reshimbagh Square. For these previous installations, the NMC collaborated with private decorators, investing approximately 3 lakh rupees per junction for a duration of 45 days.
The green nets functioned as effective makeshift canopies, substantially reducing heat stress for both motorists and pedestrians waiting at traffic signals. These temporary structures proved particularly valuable during peak summer months when surface temperatures at intersections can become dangerously high.
Safety Concerns and Design Improvements
However, the previous initiative encountered significant operational challenges. Multiple instances of nets collapsing at high-traffic intersections raised serious safety concerns, especially during sudden gusts of wind or unexpected pre-monsoon weather changes. These incidents highlighted the need for more robust installation methods and durable materials.
