Nagpur Township Plagued by Prolonged Power Cuts Amid Construction Damage

In the Shree Sai Nagari township of Besa, Nagpur, residents are grappling with an escalating crisis of prolonged power cuts that have become a distressing daily reality. What initially started as an isolated disruption nearly three months ago has now evolved into a persistent and severe problem, with outages frequently stretching up to 10-12 hours at a time. This situation is further exacerbated by Nagpur's intensifying summer heat, making life increasingly unbearable for the local community.

Root Cause: Construction Machinery Damages Underground Cable

The recurring blackouts are directly linked to significant damage to an underground electricity cable, which occurred during nearby construction activities. According to multiple residents, heavy machinery, particularly JCB excavators, has repeatedly struck the cable, leading to repeated disruptions in the power supply to the area. Despite the frequency of these incidents, locals allege that construction work has continued without implementing adequate safeguards to protect this critical utility infrastructure, raising serious concerns about negligence and safety protocols.

Severe Impact on Daily Life Amid Scorching Heat

With temperatures soaring during the summer months, the impact on daily life has been profound and distressing. Families, including vulnerable members such as young children and the elderly, are struggling immensely without access to essential amenities like fans, coolers, or a regular water supply that depends on electricity. Many residents report that the relentless outages have pushed them to a breaking point, disrupting routines, health, and overall well-being.

"Imagine having no electricity for 12 hours in this scorching heat — that is our everyday reality," said Nitin Nikhare, a resident of the township. "We have complained multiple times, both orally and in writing, yet no action has been taken. It is nearly impossible to live like this, especially with children at home."

Lack of Action Despite Formal Complaints to MSEDCL

In response to the crisis, the township society approached the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) in mid-January, seeking urgent intervention. They specifically requested that the vulnerable electricity phase line be relocated to prevent further damage to the cables and ensure a stable power supply. However, over two months later, residents claim there has been little to no progress on the ground, leaving them in a state of frustration and despair.

The ongoing delays in addressing this issue highlight broader challenges in utility management and infrastructure protection in urban areas. As the summer heat continues to intensify, the urgency for a resolution grows, with residents calling for immediate action from authorities to restore normalcy and prevent further hardship in their community.
