Nagpur Mayor Issues Stern Warning on Silt Removal Ahead of Monsoon

In a crucial review of pre-monsoon preparedness, Nagpur Mayor Neeta Thakre on Tuesday issued a firm directive to municipal officials, demanding the immediate removal of silt extracted during ongoing desilting operations across the city. The mayor emphasized that any delay in clearing this silt could result in drains becoming choked once again, completely undermining the purpose of the extensive pre-monsoon cleaning exercise.

Coordination and Timely Completion Stressed

While reviewing works in the Surendragad area, Mayor Thakre highlighted a critical concern: unattended silt piles risk being washed back into the very drains they were removed from during rainfall. She stressed the urgent need for better coordination between elected representatives and civic officials to ensure all pre-monsoon work is completed efficiently and on schedule.

Inspection of Key Infrastructure Projects

During her comprehensive inspection tour, the mayor visited multiple significant sites. This included ongoing divider construction and traffic diversion works at Bhandewadi Plot, as well as a garden development project near the Sheetla Mata temple on Umred Road, located opposite the EPFO office.

At Bhandewadi Plot, where flyover construction is progressing alongside necessary traffic diversions, residents from Bapunagar and Makode Layout have been experiencing considerable traffic disruptions. Mayor Thakre instructed officials to streamline these diversions and implement measures to minimize inconvenience for daily commuters. The inspection was attended by MLA Mohan Mate and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Lohit Matani, who both contributed suggestions to improve overall traffic flow in the affected zones.

Praise for Successful Green Initiative

Later, the mayor reviewed a plantation site adjacent to the Sheetla Mata temple. Here, nearly 1,000 trees—including species such as peepal, neem, and karanj—planted in 2022 have successfully taken root and are thriving. Mayor Thakre praised this initiative, describing it as a successful example of sustained civic effort and community environmental stewardship. Tree Officer Amol Chaurpagar provided a detailed briefing on the project's progress and maintenance.

The mayor's inspections underscore a proactive approach to urban management, focusing on both essential monsoon preparedness through desilting and traffic management, as well as long-term environmental sustainability through successful greening projects.
