Nagpur Land Acquisition Consultant's Tenure Not Extended, Projects at Risk
Nagpur Land Acquisition Consultant Tenure Not Extended

Nagpur's infrastructure momentum has hit an unexpected roadblock after the standing committee refused to extend the tenure of its land acquisition consultant, putting several high-value projects floated by Union minister Nitin Gadkari at risk of delays.

The decision, driven by objections raised by a Congress corporator, has left multiple road-widening and flyover projects in limbo, with officials warning of immediate delays.

The proposal to extend consultant Pramod Gawande's tenure by six months was rejected by standing committee chairperson Shivani Dani Wakhare following allegations flagged by Congress corporator Wasim Khan. While the nature of the complaints remains unclear, the fallout has been swift and potentially costly.

Impact on Ongoing Projects

At the heart of the crisis is the abrupt disruption of ongoing land acquisition processes, a critical component for executing large-scale urban infrastructure projects. Several works are at advanced stages, while others are midway through acquisition. With no immediate replacement in place, officials admit the administration is now scrambling to find a new consultant, a process that could stall progress for months.

Among the most affected is the ambitious flyover project connecting Indora Chowk to Dighori Chowk. While construction is nearing completion, key service roads linked to the project still require land acquisition. Any delay now could impact final connectivity and utility.

Similarly, the widening of the old Bhandara Road has already begun, but disputes over compensation have surfaced, with some residents approaching the High Court alleging inadequate payouts. A verdict is awaited, adding another layer of uncertainty.

Administrative Challenges

Civic officials privately concede that Gawande's familiarity with these projects and their complex acquisition requirements made him a crucial link. There is no immediate backup. Even identifying and onboarding a new consultant will take time, and that will directly affect project timelines, a senior official said.
