With long queues forming at petrol pumps and panic buying becoming commonplace, residents are increasingly abandoning their private vehicles and turning to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation's Aapli Bus service in unprecedented numbers.
Record-Breaking Ridership Numbers
Civic officials have reported a remarkable surge in daily ridership, with passenger footfall crossing the 1.78 lakh mark on Tuesday. This represents a significant increase from the 1.69 lakh passengers recorded on the same day just one week earlier, indicating a rapid shift in transportation preferences among Nagpur's commuters.
The trend continued through Wednesday, with officials noting sustained high ridership levels as more private vehicle users seek alternatives to navigating the challenging fuel situation. The correlation between fuel station queues and bus passenger numbers has become unmistakably clear.
Diesel Fleet Maintains Operations
Despite initial concerns about fuel availability for public transport, the civic body has successfully managed to keep almost the entire diesel bus fleet operational. Three Red Bus operators arranged the necessary diesel supplies, enabling 183 out of 195 diesel-run buses to continue service.
This fleet includes 45 mini buses and 150 midi buses, all of which have been running regularly despite the broader fuel supply pressures affecting the city. The maintenance of this critical infrastructure has prevented service disruptions during a period of heightened public transportation demand.
Official Assurance and Holiday Relief
Transport committee chairperson Mangala Khekre provided reassurance about the situation, stating that the diesel bus fleet is functioning smoothly and operations remain under control. She noted that Thursday's public holiday for Ram Navami would provide additional relief by reducing the number of buses required for service.
"The diesel bus fleet is running smoothly," Khekre confirmed. "Since Thursday is a public holiday, fewer buses are required and the fuel crisis will be managed. In case of shortage, we will give preference to operating electric buses."
Financial and Operational Improvements
The surge in ridership has produced measurable improvements in the bus service's performance metrics. Officials report that earnings per kilometer have increased from approximately Rs26.88 to nearly Rs29, while average earnings per bus have risen from about Rs5,900 to nearly Rs6,100.
These financial indicators point to higher passenger loads on each trip, confirming that buses are operating at increased capacity throughout their routes. The improved revenue generation comes at a crucial time for the public transportation system.
