The Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC), also known as Maharail, is currently awaiting crucial administrative approvals before initiating comprehensive rectification work on Nagpur's problematic Kawrapeth flyover. Political Intervention and Funding Allocation
After The Times of India's investigative reporting brought the flyover's design flaws to public attention, city legislators raised the matter in the Maharashtra State Legislative Assembly. This political pressure resulted in concrete action from Public Works Department Minister Shivendra Singh Raje Bhosale, who on July 17, 2025, formally announced that widening work at three key junctions would be undertaken with an allocated budget of Rs 20.84 crore. The minister emphasized that these improvements would specifically target congestion reduction and enhanced safety measures for all road users.
MRIDC Appointed as Executing Agency
Following the ministerial announcement, the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation was officially designated as the executing agency responsible for implementing the necessary rectifications. Corporation officials have confirmed that preliminary planning has already commenced, with technical teams focusing on developing comprehensive solutions to streamline traffic movement and address the identified structural concerns. The project is being directly overseen by MRIDC's technical division under the leadership of Managing Director Rajesh Kumar Jaiswal, who has prioritized both design optimization and safety enhancement as dual objectives.
Technical Documentation and Approval Process
The corporation has prepared and submitted a detailed General Arrangement Drawing (GAD) to the Public Works Department for formal approval. "Once we receive the necessary clearance from the PWD, the design process will advance to the next implementation stage," confirmed an MRIDC official involved in the project.
