A delegation of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) corporators conducted a critical site visit to the Mrunaltai Gore Flyover in Goregaon on Monday, aiming to review the progress of a project that has been under construction for nearly eight years. This inspection follows recent concerns raised by the BMC's standing committee, which declined to approve a proposal due to a sharp increase in project costs, highlighting significant issues in infrastructure management.
Escalating Costs and Delayed Timelines
The contract for constructing the extended flyover, which spans SV Road from Ram Mandir Road to Relief Road, was initially approved at Rs 209.64 crore, inclusive of various taxes. However, the project cost has now escalated by Rs 38.33 crore, bringing the total to Rs 247.97 crore. The construction work is being executed by the joint venture company MEPL-GYAN JV, but the prolonged timeline and financial overruns have drawn severe criticism from local representatives.
Allegations of Deliberate Delays and Poor Planning
During the inspection, several corporators alleged that the delay in construction appeared to be deliberate, pointing to inefficiencies and mismanagement. Congress's leader in the BMC and corporator Ashraf Azmi commented on the situation, noting that while the cost escalation could not be reversed at this stage as the project nears completion, the handling of the project reflects poor initial planning.
Azmi emphasized that authorities should treat this experience as a crucial lesson, advocating for better planning and execution of future infrastructure projects to avoid similar pitfalls. He stressed the need for accountability and improved oversight in municipal projects to ensure timely delivery and cost control.
