Delhi's Mukarba Chowk Underpasses to Open Soon, Easing Major Traffic Bottleneck
The long-awaited underpasses at Mukarba Chowk in north Delhi are poised to open within the next few days, with construction nearly complete and finishing touches currently underway. This critical infrastructure project aims to address one of the city's most persistent traffic bottlenecks, significantly improving connectivity along the vital Outer Ring Road corridor.
Project Details and Construction Progress
The project comprises three strategically positioned underpasses constructed near gate number 3 of the Haiderpur Badli Mor metro station. Two of these underpasses are designed exclusively for vehicular movement, while the third is dedicated to pedestrians and non-motorized transport. Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Verma confirmed that 98% of the work has been completed, with only final preparations remaining before inauguration.
"There is repeatedly a massive traffic jam at Mukarba Chowk. To fix this, our department has constructed three tunnels. As soon as the chief minister gives the date, it will be inaugurated," Verma stated, emphasizing the government's commitment to resolving traffic congestion issues across Delhi.
Engineering Specifications and Construction Technology
Each vehicular underpass has been constructed with impressive dimensions:
- Length: Approximately 50 metres
- Width: 9.6 metres
- Height: 6 metres
These specifications ensure smooth passage for a wide range of vehicles, from passenger cars to larger commercial vehicles. The project utilized advanced jack pushing technology along with precast RCC box structures, which accelerated construction while minimizing disruption on this busy arterial stretch during execution.
Expected Traffic Benefits and Connectivity Improvements
The completion of the Mukarba Chowk project promises substantial relief for commuters traveling between:
- Badli village
- Sectors 18 and 19 in Rohini
- Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar
- Shalimar Bagh
Underpasses 1 and 2 will provide direct connectivity between Badli and Rohini on one side and Azadpur and Jahangirpuri on the other. This eliminates the need for a 1.5-kilometer detour via the congested Mukarba Chowk flyover and eases movement toward Azadpur Mandi and Adarsh Nagar.
Officials estimate that nearly 15,800 vehicles daily will utilize the new corridor, with projected benefits including:
- Travel time reduction of up to 10 minutes per trip
- Distance reduction of nearly one kilometer
- Annual fuel savings of approximately 58,000 litres
Environmental Impact and Pedestrian Safety
The environmental benefits are equally significant. By reducing idling time and traffic congestion, the project could lower carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 135 tonnes annually—an effect comparable to the absorption capacity of around 810 trees each year.
The third underpass has been specifically designed to enhance pedestrian safety in the area. This dedicated passage will allow Delhi Metro passengers to safely cross Outer Ring Road toward Shalimar Bagh and Azadpur Mandi, addressing long-standing safety concerns in this high-traffic zone.
Addressing Long-Standing Commuter Challenges
The need for these underpasses has been acutely felt in surrounding areas including Badli village, Rohini sectors 18 and 19, and nearby residential pockets. Commuters from these localities heading toward Shalimar Bagh, Adarsh Nagar, or Azadpur Mandi have traditionally faced prolonged delays due to congestion near Haiderpur Badli Mor metro station, which frequently caused traffic spillback onto Outer Ring Road.
PWD officials have also conducted desilting work on supplementary drains alongside the project to prevent waterlogging during monsoon season, ensuring year-round functionality of the new infrastructure.
With inauguration expected imminently, the Mukarba Chowk underpasses represent a significant step forward in Delhi's ongoing efforts to modernize its transportation infrastructure and improve quality of life for millions of daily commuters.
