MCG Cracks Down on Illegal Advertising in Gurgaon with Overnight Drive
The Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) has taken decisive action against unauthorized advertising structures, removing 22 illegally installed unipoles during a rigorous two-day enforcement operation. The drive targeted locations along the Dwarka Expressway and in Sector 66, with teams working simultaneously late at night to minimize traffic disruptions and ensure public safety.
Safety and Aesthetics at Forefront of Enforcement
Officials emphasized that these unauthorized poles not only pose significant safety risks but also detract from the city's urban aesthetics. Municipal Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya stated, "Structures installed without authorisation are illegal and subject to fines and other action under the advertisement byelaws." He urged residents and advertisers to comply with regulations and verify approved advertising locations on the MCG's official website.
The enforcement action specifically targeted advertisement installations that were erected without prior permission from the civic body. According to municipal data, advertisement fees have already generated Rs 85.41 crore in revenue for the 2025–26 financial year, approaching the target of Rs 90 crore. This highlights the importance of regulated advertising for municipal finances.
Penalties and Ongoing Vigilance
MCG officials warned that violations can attract severe penalties, including recovery of up to three times the applicable fee. Dahiya reiterated, "Before displaying advertisements, ensure whether the said site has approval or not. This is the advertiser's responsibility." He confirmed that similar enforcement drives will continue across the city to curb illegal advertising practices.
In a related move, the civic body formed a committee in March last year to oversee the assessment, auction, and documentation process for disposing of abandoned unipoles. This initiative addresses challenges faced by MCG in handling unclaimed and dismantled structures left behind after enforcement actions. Revenue from such auctions is credited to the corporation's advertising revenue, further supporting municipal operations.
Regulatory Framework and Future Actions
As per established norms, prior permission from MCG is mandatory for erecting unipoles and displaying advertisements anywhere in Gurgaon. The corporation's crackdown underscores its commitment to enforcing these regulations strictly. Officials noted that the use of heavy machinery during the drive ensured efficient dismantling of the illegal structures, with plans for more such operations in the coming months.
This enforcement effort not only aims to enhance urban safety and aesthetics but also to protect the integrity of the city's advertising revenue streams. MCG continues to encourage stakeholders to adhere to legal frameworks and utilize approved sites for promotional activities.
