Mangaluru Launches Major Initiative to Combat Single-Use Plastic
In a significant move to reduce plastic pollution, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a comprehensive plan to distribute two free cloth bags to every household across the city. This initiative forms part of a broader strategy to enforce the ban on single-use plastics, with officials issuing stern warnings that shops found violating regulations risk losing their trade licenses.
Distribution Drive and Cost Details
The cloth bag distribution will cover all 60 wards under the MCC's jurisdiction, with an estimated total cost of Rs 80 lakh. The production of these eco-friendly bags will be entrusted to local self-help groups (SHGs), providing an economic boost to community-based enterprises.
Official Statements on Enforcement Strategy
Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Darshan HV explained the dual approach being adopted. "The distribution of cloth bags represents a soft measure to encourage behavioral change," he stated. "Simultaneously, we are taking a hard stance against violators. Shops caught selling banned plastic bags will face immediate cancellation of their trade licenses."
The DC elaborated on recent enforcement efforts, noting that officials have conducted numerous surprise inspections over the past three months, issuing warnings to non-compliant businesses. "We have identified single-use plastic manufacturers operating outside Mangaluru and reported them to the government," he added. "The supply chain will only be disrupted if we stop manufacturing at the source. However, as long as public demand persists, supply will continue. Some shops are secretly providing plastic bags despite repeated warnings, necessitating stricter penalties."
Support for Local Enterprises and Khadi Promotion
In a move to support local entrepreneurship, the MCC has decided to prioritize SHGs that promote khadi products during the tender process. "While bidders from all sectors will be welcome, we specifically want to encourage women entrepreneurs through these self-help groups," DC Darshan emphasized.
River Protection Measures
Beyond the plastic ban enforcement, the MCC has also intensified efforts to protect local water bodies. Officials have imposed penalties on several vehicles caught dumping waste, including plastic and construction materials, into the Nethravati and Phalguni rivers. "We are taking this a step further by deciding to register FIRs against those who dump waste into rivers," the DC announced, highlighting the seriousness of environmental protection efforts.
This comprehensive approach combines public awareness, economic incentives for sustainable alternatives, and strict enforcement measures, positioning Mangaluru as a leader in urban environmental initiatives.
