Mangaluru Airport Access Road Set for Major Concrete Upgrade
In a significant infrastructure boost for Mangaluru, the vital road connecting KPT Junction to Mangaluru International Airport is poised for a transformative upgrade. The focus is on a critical 500-meter segment near the Maravoor bridge, which has long been a bottleneck for travelers.
Project Details and Official Launch
District Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao officially inaugurated the Rs 9-crore road project on Saturday, marking the commencement of this much-anticipated development. This initiative falls under the ambitious Mahatma Gandhi Nagara Vikas Yojane (MGNY) 2.0 and is categorized as Package 1 among five comprehensive development packages.
The project is part of a larger suite of 25 development endeavors collectively valued at Rs 165 crore, all slated for execution within the Mangaluru City Corporation jurisdiction. The targeted stretch, located in Ward 14, Marakada ward, represents the sole remaining portion on the airport route from KPT Junction that lacks a concrete surface, making its upgrade a priority.
Addressing Commuter Grievances
For years, residents and daily commuters have voiced strong demands for improvements to this specific section. The road's deteriorated condition, characterized by numerous potholes and a damaged surface, became particularly treacherous during and after the monsoon seasons.
This poor state not only slowed traffic significantly but also caused considerable inconvenience to passengers heading to the airport, with the stretch between Marakada and Maravoor bridge earning a reputation as a hazardous passage. Previous repair efforts provided only temporary respite, failing to address the underlying issues permanently.
Scope of Work and Timeline
The comprehensive project entails more than just surface improvement. Key components include:
- Complete concretisation of the 500-meter road segment.
- Widening the existing road to a modern four-lane configuration.
- Construction of enhanced drainage facilities to prevent waterlogging.
- Building robust retaining walls for structural stability.
Officials have outlined that preparatory work, involving tree clearance and removal of roadside encroachments, will precede the main construction phase. The entire project is projected for completion within approximately three months.
Minimizing Disruption and Local Response
Authorities have assured that measures will be implemented to reduce inconvenience to the public during construction. A key strategy involves keeping one side of the existing road open to traffic at all times, ensuring continuous access for airport commuters and other road users.
The local community has welcomed the development with open arms. Ravichandra Poojary, a resident, expressed hope that the concretisation would finally resolve the long-standing difficulties faced by motorists and two-wheeler riders, for whom the damaged road posed significant safety risks.
Parallel Infrastructure Development
In a related development, another concretisation project was launched on the same day, targeting the Valencia-Gorigudda stretch. This indicates a broader, coordinated effort to enhance Mangaluru's urban road infrastructure under the MGNY 2.0 scheme, promising improved connectivity and travel experience across the city.
