Mandya's Major Sewage Infrastructure Project Hits Delays, Officials Ordered to Accelerate

A significant underground drainage (UGD) project valued at Rs 30 crore is currently being implemented within the jurisdiction of the Mandya City Municipal Council. The initiative is being executed through the Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC), as confirmed by Deputy Commissioner Kumara.

Project Aims to Transform Wastewater Management

The primary objective of this substantial infrastructure endeavor is to strengthen wastewater management systems and significantly enhance sanitation infrastructure across the city of Mandya. This announcement was made during the District-Level Implementation Committee meeting held at the municipal council hall. The gathering was convened to review various projects under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) 2.0 and the National Green Tribunal's Environmental Compensation Fund specifically allocated for used water management.

Key Components and Upgrades of the Sewage Plan

The comprehensive project includes several critical upgrades and new constructions:

  • Upgradation of Sewage Treatment Plants: The sewage treatment plant (STP) located on Yattagadahalli Road will be enhanced to achieve a treatment capacity of 10 million litres per day (MLD). Simultaneously, the STP at Chikkegowdanadoddi will undergo major improvements to boost its operational efficiency.
  • New Pipeline Infrastructure: The plan involves constructing a substantial 2.72-kilometer outfall sewer line utilizing pipes of varying diameters. Additionally, a 462-meter UPVC pipeline will be laid to facilitate efficient sewage transport.
  • Treatment Plant Enhancements: The project covers the upgradation of primary treatment plants and wet wells, along with the installation of sludge pumps boasting a combined capacity of 83 horsepower.
  • Long-Term Maintenance Contract: A major contractual component includes the complete operation and maintenance of both the Yattagadahalli and Chikkegowdanadoddi sewage treatment plants for a period of five years, ensuring sustained functionality.

Project Timeline and Current Delays

The work order for this ambitious project was officially issued by KUIDFC in March 2025 to a Bengaluru-based firm. The original schedule mandated completion by August 2025. However, during the review meeting, Deputy Commissioner Kumara expressed strong dissatisfaction with the progress achieved thus far, noting that the work had fallen considerably behind the planned timeline. He issued clear directives to the concerned authorities to immediately speed up execution to get the project back on track.

DC Issues Directives for Monitoring and Lake Rejuvenation

Kumara instructed officials from KUIDFC, the District Urban Development Cell, and the Mandya City Municipal Council to conduct regular, on-site inspections and submit detailed progress reports to ensure accountability. Furthermore, he tasked them with preparing a concrete action plan for the Rs 4 crore sanctioned under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme. These funds are specifically earmarked for the crucial rejuvenation of Guttalu Lake, a vital local water body.

Environmental Safeguards and Future Impact

Deputy Commissioner Kumara emphasized the critical environmental importance of the project. He stated that upon successful completion, all wastewater generated in the area will be systematically routed to the upgraded treatment plants. The sewage will be processed in strict accordance with the standards set by the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board before being safely released. This process is designed to ensure that Guttalu Lake remains completely free from contamination, preserving its ecological health and benefiting the community.
