Anand Mahindra Applauds Kolkata's Innovative Urban Space Transformation
Mahindra Group chairman Anand Mahindra has publicly praised a remarkable urban renewal project in Kolkata, where a former garbage dump has been ingeniously converted into a dynamic community sports and recreation zone. The initiative, executed by the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC), has garnered international attention for its optimal and beneficial use of urban space.
From Waste to Wonder: The Baguiati Flyover Transformation
A 100-meter stretch at the Baguiati Joramandir crossing, located beneath the Baguiati flyover on VIP Road, was once notorious for being strewn with garbage and neglected. Today, it stands as a vibrant community hub featuring a cricket and football playing arena, along with dedicated zones for zumba, skating, and even a pet park. This transformation has not only cleaned up a blighted area but has also provided valuable recreational space for local residents.
"It is indeed a wonderful addition to Kolkata and will add to the already transforming image of the city," Mahindra posted on his X handle, expressing his admiration for the project. He noted that the news of this sports facility has gone global, with comments marveling at the efficient utilization of urban infrastructure.
A Nationwide Trend of Urban Ingenuity
Mahindra emphasized that this Kolkata project is part of a broader, inspiring trend across India. "Indore pioneered the concept in 2021 by transforming the space beneath the Pipliyahana flyover into an exclusive sports complex. Since then, cities like Surat, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, and Vadodara have followed suit," he stated in his post. He recalled that in 2023, he had shared a similar transformation in Navi Mumbai, hoping it would catalyze a nationwide movement.
The industrialist highlighted the significance of such decentralized efforts. "While many states, Odisha being a prime example, are building world-class centralized hubs, the real shift happens in the neighborhood. By dispersing sports access into everyday urban spaces, we do more than build courts; we nurture a sporting mindset and culture from the ground up," Mahindra elaborated, underscoring the community-centric approach of these projects.
Kolkata's Expanding Legacy of Urban Renewal
This is not an isolated case in Kolkata. The city has witnessed several successful conversions of waste dumpyards into community zones in recent years:
- In 2021, the New Town Kolkata Development Authority transformed a waste dumping ground in New Town into a mini garden complete with a walkway and benches, offering residents a peaceful retreat.
- Following this, in 2022, a stretch below the Axis Mall flyover on New Town's main arterial road was developed into a vibrant public hangout zone. This area now features colorful graffiti, comfortable sitting areas, and designated spaces for small social gatherings and pop-up events.
These initiatives collectively demonstrate a growing commitment to enhancing urban livability through creative and sustainable solutions. By repurposing underutilized or degraded spaces, Kolkata is setting a precedent for other cities to follow, fostering community engagement and promoting a healthier, more active lifestyle among its citizens.
