Mahim Beach Plunged Into Darkness: Activists Demand Urgent Street Light Repairs
Mumbai's popular Mahim Beach is facing a significant safety crisis as numerous street lights along the shoreline have ceased to function, leaving extensive areas shrouded in darkness after sunset. Local activists have raised alarm bells over this hazardous situation, warning that the lack of proper illumination is endangering public safety.
Public Safety at Risk
Social worker and activist Syed M. Ismail has urgently appealed to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the BEST electricity wing to restore and expand street lighting at Reti Bunder Beach immediately. Ismail emphasized that the current poor lighting conditions are creating an unsafe environment for residents, visitors, and families who frequent the beach, particularly during evening hours.
The absence of adequate lighting significantly increases the risk of untoward incidents and criminal activities, according to activists. They report that the existing lighting infrastructure is woefully insufficient, with only a handful of functional lamps scattered across the beach area.
Inadequate Infrastructure
Activists have highlighted that the current street lighting setup at Reti Bunder Beach is not only malfunctioning but also fundamentally inadequate for the area's needs. The few working lamps provide minimal coverage, leaving large stretches completely dark and creating hazardous conditions for beachgoers.
In addition to demanding immediate repairs of the faulty lights, Ismail has called for a comprehensive upgrade of the lighting infrastructure. This includes installing additional street light poles in the inner sections of Reti Bunder Beach to ensure comprehensive illumination throughout the entire area.
Official Response Awaited
Despite repeated appeals from activists and concerned citizens, government officials have remained unavailable for comment on this pressing issue. The lack of official response has heightened concerns among local residents who rely on the beach for recreation and relaxation.
The situation at Mahim Beach underscores broader infrastructure challenges facing Mumbai's public spaces. As the city continues to develop and attract visitors, maintaining basic safety amenities like proper lighting becomes increasingly crucial for protecting citizens and promoting public welfare.
