Ludhiana Municipal Corporation Honored with Global Smart City Water Award

In a significant achievement, the Municipal Corporation (MC) Ludhiana has been conferred the 'Best Smart City Water Initiative Award' at the prestigious Global Sustainability and Innovation Awards 2026. The ceremony took place in New Delhi on Tuesday, recognizing the city's innovative efforts in water management.

Project Details and Recognition

The award was specifically granted for the Canal Based Water Supply project, which is funded by the World Bank and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). This initiative is being implemented under the guidance of Mayor Inderjit Kaur and MC Commissioner Neeru Katyal Gupta. The project has been lauded for incorporating advanced technology and demonstrating impressive progress speed.

During the awards event, organized by the Earth Water Foundation, MC Joint Commissioner Vineet Kumar accepted the honor on behalf of the Municipal Corporation Ludhiana. The award was presented by Durga Shankar Mishra, the former Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh. Superintending Engineer Parul Goyal was also in attendance at the ceremony.

Technological Advancements and Infrastructure

The canal-based water supply project is designed to provide treated surface water to households across Ludhiana. Currently, the first phase of the project is underway. Key components of this initiative include:

  • Upgradation of the existing water supply infrastructure.
  • Establishment of a world-class water treatment plant (WTP) in village Bilga, near Sahnewal.

The project integrates state-of-the-art technological developments in water management, such as:

  1. Automation through SCADA systems.
  2. VFD-operated valves for efficient control.
  3. Advanced leak detection systems.
  4. Digital twin technology for simulation and monitoring.

Upon completion, this project is expected to mark a milestone in Ludhiana's history, ensuring the provision of clean canal water to all residents.

Mayor Inderjit Kaur and MC Commissioner Neeru Katyal Gupta expressed immense pride in this recognition. They congratulated the civic body officials and residents for this achievement, emphasizing that the focus remains on sustainable development. The Municipal Corporation Ludhiana is committed to continuing its efforts in enhancing urban infrastructure and environmental sustainability.
