Ludhiana Mayor Launches Fire Safety Week with Awareness Rally and Tribute
In a significant move to enhance public safety, Mayor Inderjit Kaur officially inaugurated the Fire Safety Week at the Fire Brigade Headquarters near the railway station in Ludhiana on Tuesday. The launch ceremony was attended by key civic officials, including MC Assistant Commissioner Neeraj Jain and Assistant Divisional Fire Officer (ADFO) Jaswinder Singh, alongside dedicated firefighters and other municipal representatives.
Flagging Off the Awareness Rally
As a core component of the initiative, Mayor Inderjit Kaur flagged off an awareness rally designed to educate residents about essential fire safety measures. The rally, organized under the theme "Engage, educate and empower people to enhance safety," traversed multiple prominent areas of the city. Its route included Railway Station Road, Mall Road, Gill Road, Ferozepur Road, and Jagraon Bridge, aiming to reach a broad audience and spread critical safety messages.
Tribute to Fallen Firefighters
During the event, a solemn moment was observed as Mayor Inderjit Kaur, along with officials and firefighters, held a two-minute silence. This tribute honored the brave firefighters who have lost their lives while performing their duties, highlighting the risks and sacrifices associated with firefighting.
Historical Significance and Weeklong Activities
ADFO Jaswinder Singh explained that Fire Safety Week is observed nationally from April 14 to April 20 each year. This period commemorates the tragic fire and explosions that occurred on April 14, 1944, at the Victoria Dock in Mumbai Port, which resulted in significant loss of life. The weeklong program in Ludhiana is being conducted under the directives of Mayor Inderjit Kaur and MC Commissioner Neeru Katyal Gupta.
Assistant Commissioner Neeraj Jain and ADFO Jaswinder Singh detailed the comprehensive activities planned by the MC Fire Brigade Wing to foster awareness. These include:
- Training exercises and mock drills at public venues and hospitals
- Blood donation camps to support community health
- Competitions in schools and educational institutions to engage youth
