Major Infrastructure Boost for Lucknow Ahead of Monsoon Season
In a significant development aimed at alleviating long-standing urban flooding issues, the Uttar Pradesh government has granted approval for a comprehensive Rs 176-crore drain remodeling project in Lucknow. This initiative is specifically designed to address chronic waterlogging problems in the Sarojini Nagar area, providing much-needed relief to residents as the monsoon season approaches.
Project Scope and Expected Benefits
The ambitious project focuses on the remodeling of the Kila Mohammadi drain, a critical water channel in the region. Upon completion, it is projected to benefit more than 2.5 lakh residents spread across over 240 localities. Key areas set to gain from this infrastructure upgrade include Ashiana, Sharda Nagar, and the Kanpur Road sectors, which have historically suffered from severe water accumulation during heavy rains.
Officials have confirmed that the project will encompass an extensive urban stretch exceeding 35 kilometers. The approval follows persistent advocacy by Sarojini Nagar MLA Rajeshwar Singh, who reportedly maintained continuous engagement with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to secure the necessary clearances for this vital proposal.
Technical Specifications and Construction Details
The plan involves the reconstruction of a 7.156-kilometer segment of the drain, stretching from VIP Road to Ithuriya Pulia. Additionally, a 3.415-kilometer diversion drain will be constructed to enhance water flow management. In total, approximately 10.571 kilometers of modern Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) drains will be developed, replacing outdated and inefficient sections.
Authorities have emphasized that the drain width will be significantly increased, particularly around the airport zone, to accommodate higher water volumes and prevent bottlenecks. Furthermore, existing earthen sections of the drain will be upgraded to durable reinforced concrete structures, ensuring long-term resilience and reduced maintenance needs.
