Lucknow's Green Corridor Phase 2 Inaugurated, Enhancing Urban Mobility
The city of Lucknow has taken a significant stride towards improved urban connectivity with the inauguration of the second phase of its ambitious Green Corridor project on Friday. This development brings the metropolis closer to achieving a comprehensive signal-free route that will seamlessly link major commercial hubs including Indira Nagar, Gomti Nagar, Hazratganj, and the historic Old City.
Project Overview and Strategic Impact
Strategically planned along the picturesque Gomti river, the complete Green Corridor will span an impressive 28 kilometers from IIM Road to Kisan Path. The entire project represents a substantial investment of Rs 1,519 crore and is projected to benefit approximately 15 lakh residents by dramatically reducing travel time across various parts of the city.
The newly operational second phase constitutes a crucial seven-kilometer segment that runs from Daliganj through Nishatganj, Hanuman Setu, Nishatganj Bandha, and the Kukrail river area, culminating at Samta Mulak Chowk near the Pipraghat railway bridge. This specific stretch was constructed at a cost of nearly Rs 300 crore, demonstrating the project's scale and commitment to urban development.
Official Statements and Commuter Benefits
Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) Vice-Chairperson Prathamesh Kumar emphasized the corridor's potential to alleviate congestion in central areas. "Travel time on key routes such as Gomti Nagar to Daliganj is expected to be reduced to just 10–15 minutes, which will benefit more than one lakh commuters on a daily basis," Kumar stated, highlighting the project's immediate practical impact.
While the second phase becomes fully operational, construction work has simultaneously commenced on the remaining portions of the corridor. The upcoming third and fourth phases will connect Pipraghat to Kisan Path, with combined estimated costs of approximately Rs 1,220 crore. Notably, the state government has already approved Rs 1,000 crore for these subsequent phases.
Future Phases and Environmental Considerations
The third phase will cover nearly 5.8 kilometers from the Pipraghat Railway Bridge to Shaheed Path. This segment includes several critical infrastructure components:
- Construction of a 240-meter railway overbridge
- Significant embankment widening
- Comprehensive improvements along Dilkusha Road
The final fourth phase will extend another 6.3 kilometers from Shaheed Path to Kisan Path, ultimately completing the entire riverfront route and realizing the vision of a fully integrated transportation corridor.
LDA Secretary Vivek Srivastava addressed environmental concerns, noting that 166 trees were carefully transplanted during the construction process, reflecting the project's commitment to sustainable development alongside urban infrastructure enhancement.
This Green Corridor initiative represents a transformative approach to urban planning in Lucknow, promising not only reduced commute times but also improved air quality through decreased traffic congestion and enhanced connectivity between the city's commercial and residential zones.
