Lieutenant Governor Reviews Comprehensive NDMC Development Initiatives
Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu conducted a detailed review of key initiatives undertaken by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) on Wednesday. The high-level meeting focused on three critical areas: implementing advanced waste management systems, creating pedestrian-friendly infrastructure in high-footfall commercial hubs, and rationalizing power tariffs for residents within the NDMC jurisdiction.
Pedestrianization Plans for Connaught Place and Khan Market
The discussion prominently featured plans to pedestrianize two of Delhi's most iconic commercial destinations: Connaught Place and Khan Market. Sources indicated that the comprehensive plan aims to enhance walkability while simultaneously ensuring adequate parking facilities to maintain the vibrant footfall that characterizes these markets. The objective is to create a balanced approach that prioritizes pedestrian safety and convenience without compromising commercial viability.
LG Sandhu emphasized that as the urban local body responsible for managing the capital's core areas, NDMC carries the significant responsibility of delivering services that are efficient, citizen-centric, and replicable as models of global standards and best practices. He made this statement in a post on X, highlighting the council's crucial role in urban governance.
Advanced Waste Management and Infrastructure Priorities
The meeting extensively explored the adoption of advanced technologies and global best practices for efficient waste management systems. LG Sandhu stressed that sustained priority must be given to effective garbage management, timely road repairs, dust mitigation measures, and swift resolution of issues flagged by citizens and media outlets.
He further advised NDMC officials to remain open and responsive to public feedback, actively working to bridge the gap between on-ground realities and service delivery expectations. This approach was identified as an essential prerequisite for achieving truly citizen-centric governance that meets the needs of Delhi's residents.
Power Tariff Rationalization for NDMC Residents
In a significant development for residents, the meeting examined measures to rationalize power tariffs for people living in NDMC areas. This initiative aims to reduce the financial burden on households, particularly since the NDMC area does not fall under the purview of conventional power distribution companies (discoms). Consequently, residents in these areas currently do not receive the subsidy benefits available to other Delhi residents.
The comprehensive review underscores NDMC's commitment to addressing both infrastructure development and citizen welfare concerns through coordinated planning and implementation of sustainable urban solutions.
