Passengers Face Nighttime Navigation Woes on KSRTC Electric Buses in Thiruvananthapuram
Residents and commuters in Thiruvananthapuram are encountering significant difficulties when attempting to read the destination boards on mini electric buses operated by the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) during nighttime hours. This persistent issue stems from a combination of malfunctioning digital displays and inadequately illuminated hand-painted signs, leading to widespread passenger confusion and frustration across the city.
Digital Board Failures and Inadequate Lighting Compromise Passenger Experience
The core of the problem lies with the digital route boards installed on these buses, which were procured under the Smart City Mission. Despite being equipped with modern technology, these digital boards are non-operational in a substantial number of the services. In response, KSRTC staff have resorted to installing hand-painted route boards near the windscreens. However, these makeshift solutions lack sufficient lighting, rendering them nearly invisible after dark. Compounding the issue, many bus stops also suffer from poor illumination, further hindering passengers' ability to identify their desired routes.
With 150 electric buses currently in operation, the scale of this problem affects a significant portion of the city's public transport network. Some buses even have destination information hastily scribbled on white cardboard, which offers little clarity. Although certain vehicles display route numbers, the destination boards remain crucial because these services follow unconventional circular routes, making accurate identification essential for passengers.
Passenger Frustrations and Operational Challenges Highlight Systemic Issues
Passenger accounts vividly illustrate the daily hardships caused by these inadequate signage systems. P Ramesh Kumar, a regular commuter, expressed his difficulties, stating, "It is challenging to read the boards on most of these buses. I often have to wait until the bus reaches the bus stop to confirm its destination." Instances of confusion are common, with many individuals seen inquiring with bus crew or fellow passengers about the route. This is particularly problematic when the hand-painted boards are crammed with too many place names, creating clutter and reducing readability.
In one notable incident, when a passenger complained about the lack of lighting on a bus traveling from Statue to Poojappura, the crew reportedly did not understand the issue and reacted with anger. This highlights a broader communication gap, as many crew members feel helpless and often fail to grasp the severity of the problem, despite repeated complaints from the public.
Underlying Technical and Administrative Hurdles Prolong the Crisis
Sources within KSRTC reveal deeper operational challenges contributing to this ongoing issue. The electric buses are operated from depots at East Fort, Peroorkada, and Pappanamcode. For the digital destination boards to function correctly, the destination and route information must be pre-loaded using specialized software. However, KSRTC staff have not been granted access to this software, preventing them from making necessary updates or repairs.
Furthermore, these buses are not assigned to fixed routes daily, adding another layer of complexity. Without the ability to program the digital boards, staff are forced to rely on hand-painted signs, which are impractical and poorly suited for nighttime conditions. Despite the digital boards remaining unused for nearly a year, there has been no concerted effort by authorities to address or resolve this critical malfunction, leaving passengers to navigate an increasingly confusing transport system.
The situation underscores a significant oversight in the implementation of smart city initiatives, where technological upgrades are rendered ineffective due to administrative and technical shortcomings. As Thiruvananthapuram continues to modernize its public transport, resolving these destination board issues is imperative to ensure a seamless and user-friendly commuting experience for all residents.
