Kochi Water Crisis: Pipe Bursts Disrupt Supply, AMRUT Stalled

Kochi Grapples with Severe Water Supply Disruptions Due to Frequent Pipe Bursts

Residents across Kochi and its suburbs are facing significant hardships as frequent pipe bursts continue to disrupt water supply in multiple areas. The crisis stems primarily from the city's aging and dilapidated pipeline infrastructure, with locations like Aluva experiencing repeated failures that cut off essential water access.

Recent Incidents Highlight Systemic Infrastructure Failures

Just days ago, water supply to critical facilities, including the Aluva district hospital, was interrupted following emergency repair works. The situation worsened when another pipe burst occurred near the Mahilalayam area on the Aluva-Perumbavoor route, causing widespread disruptions. A Kerala Water Authority official stated, "We are conducting the repair works and expect that it can be completed without much delay." This incident follows damage to a separate pipe located mere meters away just a couple of days prior, underscoring the fragility of the existing network.

AMRUT Scheme Replacement Project Stalled by Bureaucratic Hurdles

Authorities have identified a long-term solution but face implementation challenges. An official revealed, "We have a project to replace the old, dilapidated pipes in the town with new ones under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation scheme. We are unable to start the work as the road-owning agencies are reluctant to grant permission to dig up the roads to lay the pipes." This bureaucratic impasse leaves residents vulnerable to ongoing supply failures.

Residents Voice Frustration Over Unresolved Water Scarcity

In areas like Pettah, the water scarcity has become a persistent issue despite repeated appeals to authorities. V P Chandran, councillor from Vyttila, expressed deep concern: "We took up the issue with the KWA officials, district collector, and corporation authorities several times. Several meetings to explore ways to resolve the issue were convened by the district collector. Still, the issue remains unresolved." Chandran further explained that a partial collapse of a water storage tank at Thammanam in November 2025 has severely reduced storage capacity and pumping frequency, preventing water from reaching tail-end areas such as Pettah.

Additional Factors Exacerbating the Supply Crisis

The problem extends beyond pipe bursts. A reduction in pumping from the pumphouse in Muvattupuzha at Pazhoor, which supplies water to the treatment plant at Maradu, is also affecting distribution to various parts of the city. This multi-faceted crisis highlights systemic issues in Kochi's water management infrastructure, demanding urgent and coordinated action from all stakeholders to restore reliable supply to affected communities.
