Kochi's Vyttila Junction to Undergo Signal-Free Traffic Plan Trial Runs

In a significant move aimed at resolving the persistent traffic congestion at Vyttila Junction, the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) in Kochi is set to conduct trial runs of a proposed signal-free traffic plan. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to ensure smooth traffic flow at what is considered the busiest junction in the state of Kerala.

Details of the Proposed Plan

The signal-free plan is derived from a detailed report that has been submitted to the district collector and will be presented before the Road Safety Council in the coming weeks, according to a senior MVD official. The comprehensive measures include reducing the existing 16-meter roundabout beneath the flyover to create more 'holding space' for vehicles, chipping off traffic median edges to allow buses from the Kundannoor side to enter the Vyttila Mobility Hub directly via Kaniyampuzha Road, and implementing unobstructed left turns across all major arms of the junction.

Background and Funding

The redevelopment plan for Vyttila Junction was initiated following a high-level site inspection conducted on May 6, 2025, by Transport Minister K B Ganesh Kumar, along with officials from the MVD, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Public Works Department (PWD), and traffic police. To support these structural changes, the Kerala Road Safety Authority (KRSA) has approved a Rs 1.5 crore project. The funds are slated for transfer to the PWD (NH Wing), with the tendering process currently in its final stages.

Community Involvement and Specific Traffic Changes

Thampy V R, chairperson of the Vyttila United Forum, confirmed that the trial run will be carried out soon, based on earlier submitted plans to make the junction signal-free and ensure smooth traffic flow. As per the forum's suggestions, the signal-free traffic movement will involve several key changes:

  • Vehicles from Aluva will enjoy a free left turn.
  • Those heading towards Tripunithura or Kundannoor will utilize a free right turn through the mobility hub.
  • The stretch from Metro Road to Temple Junction will be converted to a one-way to facilitate a free left for Tripunithura-bound traffic.
  • Commuters from Tripunithura heading towards Thykoodam will be diverted via a free left through the Power House Link Road.
  • Vehicles traveling from Aroor towards Ponnurunni or the hub will perform a line interchange to take a dedicated right turn via Kaniyampuzha Road, ensuring that the main junction remains clear of intersecting cross-traffic.

These measures are designed to significantly reduce congestion and improve overall traffic efficiency at Vyttila Junction, marking a critical step in Kochi's urban infrastructure development.
