Kanpur Implements Strict Measures to Combat Traffic Congestion Near Schools
In a decisive move to alleviate persistent traffic bottlenecks and enhance road safety, the Kanpur district administration has issued a firm directive prohibiting the parking of school buses and private vehicles belonging to parents on roads adjacent to educational institutions situated along major thoroughfares. The order, announced on Monday, aims to streamline vehicular movement during peak school hours.
Comprehensive Traffic Management Strategy Unveiled
Presiding over a crucial road safety committee meeting, District Magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh outlined a multi-pronged approach. Staff deployment at school gates during opening and closing times will be mandatory to oversee traffic flow. Furthermore, a revised schedule has been meticulously finalized for 81 schools across the district, set to be implemented from April 1, 2026, to systematically organize transportation and reduce clustering.
"Schools have already been formally notified and are expected to adhere strictly to these new regulations," stated DM Singh. He emphasized that compliance is non-negotiable for ensuring the plan's success.
Enhanced Vehicle Inspection and Monitoring Protocols
Complementing the parking restrictions, a special inspection drive targeting school vehicles is scheduled from April 1 to April 15, 2026. Teams from the Transport Department will conduct thorough checks at various institutions. Detailed information of all school vehicles will be digitally recorded and uploaded to a designated online portal for enhanced transparency and monitoring.
Educational institutions have also been instructed to:
- Conduct regular meetings of their Vehicle Operations Committees.
- Maintain meticulous and up-to-date records of all vehicle-related operations.
Crackdown on Encroachments and Infrastructure Plans
The administration's decongestion efforts extend beyond schools. During the meeting, PWD Executive Engineer Arun Kumar Jayant reported that 14 illegally constructed shops along GT Road have been recently demolished, with assurances that such anti-encroachment drives will persist to ensure unimpeded traffic movement.
Specific congestion hotspots were also addressed:
- Liquor shops in Ramadevi and Naramau: Notices have been issued to owners to remove encroachments, with legal action threatened for non-compliance.
- Roadside vegetable markets near Ramadevi: These were reviewed for their contribution to traffic disruptions.
Looking ahead, District Magistrate Singh directed officials to draft a proposal for constructing a foot-over bridge near ALIMCO to improve pedestrian safety. He also stressed the importance of broader public awareness campaigns for government schemes like the Rahveer Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana.
