Jaipur Development Authority Unveils Twin Strategy to Tackle Sahakar Marg Traffic Woes
The Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) has put forward a comprehensive twin plan aimed at significantly improving traffic flow on Sahakar Marg, one of Jaipur's most congested arterial roads that regularly experiences severe bottlenecks during peak hours. This innovative proposal seeks to optimize road usage and enhance mobility between key points like Bais Godam and JP Phatak, while addressing the issue of underutilized road space on the opposite flank.
Balancing Road Usage with Strategic Lane Adjustments
Under the proposed plan, the Bais Godam-bound side of Sahakar Marg, stretching up to the JP Phatak underpass, will be widened into a three-lane corridor to accommodate the high volume of traffic. Concurrently, the Tonk Road-bound flank will be reduced to a single lane. JDA officials explain that this reconfiguration is designed to balance road usage more effectively, as the Tonk Road-bound side has seen a notable decline in traffic following the construction of the Laxmi Mandir Tiraha underpass and its conversion into a signal-free intersection.
Addressing Underutilization and Encroachment Issues
According to JDA authorities, the stretch between JP Phatak and Laxmi Mandir Tiraha on the Tonk Road-bound side is now largely underutilized, leading to gradual encroachment by hawkers from the nearby Lal Kothi Sabji Mandi. In stark contrast, the Bais Godam-bound side frequently suffers from severe traffic jams, exacerbated by vehicles making U-turns from a cut near Sarovar Hotel to access the JP Phatak underpass, creating significant bottlenecks during rush hours.
Proposed Infrastructure Changes to Enhance Flow
To mitigate these challenges, the JDA has proposed shifting the divider between Laxmi Mandir Tiraha and JP Phatak and closing the road cut in front of Sarovar Hotel. In its place, a dedicated U-turn bay will be constructed at the Tonk Road end of Sahakar Marg, aiming to streamline traffic movements and reduce congestion. An official stated that these measures are crucial for improving overall traffic efficiency and safety on this busy stretch.

The proposal is currently under active consideration and will require approval through multiple meetings, including a key session with the Traffic Control Board of the JDA.
