HYDRAA Takes Action on Encroachments in Hyderabad Following Public Complaints
In response to numerous complaints received through the Prajavani platform, the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) carried out extensive field inspections and clearance operations across the city on Wednesday. This proactive initiative aimed to address illegal encroachments and environmental degradation that have been plaguing various localities.
Banjara Lake Inspection Reveals Severe Pollution and Encroachments
The HYDRAA team, led by Commissioner A V Ranganath, first inspected Banjara Lake near Road No. 1 in Banjara Hills. This inspection was prompted by complaints from MLA Danam Nagender and local residents. Situated opposite the Taj Banjara Hotel, the lake was found to be in a dire state, with significant pollution and unauthorized constructions.
During the visit, officials observed untreated sewage flowing directly into the lake, while a large portion of its surface was covered with plastic waste and other debris. Commissioner Ranganath expressed deep concern, stating, "The lake, which was once a clean water source, has now become one of the most polluted in the city. There are various constructions within the Full Tank Level (FTL) area, along with indiscriminate waste dumping, which threaten its very existence."
He also addressed complaints that encroachments were blocking access to the Kattamaisamma temple, assuring that a detailed inquiry would be conducted. Ranganath emphasized that government land around the lake would be protected and a comprehensive restoration plan would be developed, while reassuring residents that their homes would not be affected.
Investigation into Disappearing Lakes in Shamshabad Mandal
Later in the day, the team visited Mamidipalli in Shamshabad mandal, where locals reported the disappearance of several lakes, including Ongoni Kunta, Kanakayya Kunta, Marrivanikunta, and Errakunta. In response, Ranganath directed irrigation and revenue officials to collect complete data on these lakes and their associated stormwater channels.
He noted that blockages in these channels have been causing flooding in nearby residential areas, highlighting the urgent need for restoration and maintenance to prevent further environmental and safety issues.
Road Encroachment Removed in Secunderabad
In a separate action, the HYDRAA team addressed an encroachment in New Bhoiguda, Bansilalpet, Secunderabad. They restored a 20-foot-wide road that had been partially obstructed by an illegal construction. Acting on public complaints, officials demolished an under-construction building that had encroached nearly half of the road.
Ranganath explained, "This structure included a proposed shop on the ground floor and a residence above. It had severely restricted vehicular movement, causing inconvenience to the community." This swift action demonstrates HYDRAA's commitment to improving urban infrastructure and ensuring public safety.
Overall, these operations underscore HYDRAA's dedication to addressing citizen grievances and preserving Hyderabad's environmental and public spaces through rigorous enforcement and restoration efforts.
