Hyderabad Secures Three High-Speed Rail Corridors in Union Budget Boost
In a landmark decision for Telangana's rail infrastructure, the Centre has granted approval for three high-speed rail corridors originating from Hyderabad. This announcement, made during the Union Budget presentation by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, marks the highest allocation of such projects to any single city in the country. The corridors are set to connect Hyderabad with Pune, Bengaluru, and Chennai, promising to revolutionize inter-city travel across southern India.
Drastic Reduction in Travel Times
According to officials from the South Central Railway, the implementation of these high-speed rail lines will lead to a dramatic decrease in journey durations. Currently, superfast express trains take approximately 10 to 11 hours to cover the 600-kilometer distance between Hyderabad and Pune. With the new high-speed rail, this travel time is expected to plummet to just 2.5 hours, representing a reduction of nearly seven hours.
Similarly, trips to Bengaluru and Chennai, which typically require 8 to 10 hours via express or superfast trains, will be shortened to less than three hours. While flights to these destinations take about 1.15 to 1.2 hours, the high-speed rail offers a competitive and efficient alternative for ground travel.
Project Timeline and Development Details
Construction on the proposed high-speed rail corridors is anticipated to commence by 2027, with the entire project likely to span five to seven years for completion. This timeline is contingent upon factors such as land acquisition, regulatory approvals, and execution schedules. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized that the Hyderabad–Chennai–Bengaluru network will be developed as a triangular railway corridor, enhancing not only passenger travel but also freight movement and overall urban growth.
Indigenously developed high-speed train coaches will be deployed on these routes, operating at speeds of up to 300 kilometers per hour. This initiative is poised to position Hyderabad as a pivotal national transportation hub, reflecting its growing strategic importance.

Additionally, the Mumbai–Pune high-speed rail corridor announced by the Centre will indirectly benefit Hyderabad passengers. By utilizing the Hyderabad–Pune line and then transferring to the Pune–Mumbai service, travelers can reach Mumbai in approximately 3.45 hours, compared to the current 12 to 15 hours.
