The Himachal Pradesh state department of prisons and correctional services has introduced a novel reform initiative titled 'Akshar Se Atmabodh,' meaning 'remission by reading,' aimed at fostering positive behavioral changes among prisoners through the power of literature. This program was first launched at Model Central Jail in Kanda on April 28 by the director general of prisons and correctional services, Abhishek Trivedi, and subsequently at district jail in Solan on May 21. Plans are now underway to expand this initiative to all jails across the state.
How the Initiative Works
Under this program, inmates will be provided with a curated selection of inspirational, educational, and morally enriching books. These include motivational literature, biographies of notable figures, spiritual texts, and personality development materials. After reading a book, each prisoner is required to submit a concise summary detailing what they have learned from the text. Based on their participation and demonstrated understanding, eligible inmates may receive remission in their sentence, in accordance with existing rules and regulations.
Goals and Impact
The department has stated that the primary aim of 'Akshar Se Atmabodh' is to help prisoners transform into responsible and self-reliant citizens. By engaging with thought-provoking content, inmates are encouraged to reflect on their actions, develop empathy, and acquire new perspectives that can aid in their rehabilitation. This initiative not only promotes literacy but also serves as a constructive tool for behavioral correction, reducing recidivism and preparing prisoners for successful reintegration into society.
The program has been well-received by prison authorities and inmates alike, with many expressing enthusiasm for the opportunity to earn remission through reading. As the initiative expands statewide, it is expected to have a significant positive impact on the correctional system in Himachal Pradesh.
