Gurgaon Administration Prioritizes Child Safety with New 'Safe Zones' Initiative

In a significant move to enhance road safety for students, the Gurgaon city administration has announced the creation of "safe zones" around schools. This initiative focuses squarely on accident prevention and child safety, responding directly to alarming findings from a recent survey on school commutes.

Survey Exposes Critical Safety Gaps

The decision follows a comprehensive survey conducted last October by the traffic engineering centre of the traffic police, which assessed safe school commutes at 10 institutions. The survey concluded that the absence of proper infrastructure "poses a significant risk to student safety." It highlighted numerous deficiencies, including lack of pedestrian crossings, encroached walking spaces, and missing traffic calming measures like speed humps and rumble strips.

According to the report, many schools in Gurgaon suffer from inadequate markings, such as colour-coded school zone indicators and directional arrows. The absence of kerb stones and pedestrian railings was noted to increase pedestrian-vehicle conflicts, as these features prevent unsafe road entry by children.

Phase One Targets 11 Schools for Transformation

Under the first phase of this initiative, the administration will redesign nearly 100-meter stretches around 11 selected government and private schools. The goal is to ensure secure movement for students during critical times like road crossings, school bus boarding, and entry-exit hours.

Each safe zone will feature a suite of upgrades:

  • Mandatory school zone markings and strictly enforced speed limits
  • Upgraded road stretches with proper footpaths and waiting areas equipped with benches
  • Fresh wall paintings and properly aligned zebra crossings
  • Regular road maintenance to prevent potholes or obstructions

Govt School of Kadipur has been designated as the first site for development. Officials plan to replicate this model at other locations once the pilot proves successful.

Authorities Emphasize Collaboration and Future Expansion

Deputy Commissioner Ajay Kumar stated, "The core objective is to avoid accidents and create a safer environment for school-going children in the city. More schools will be added in the next phase after evaluating the impact of the first rollout."

The district road safety committee is collaborating closely with the traffic police to identify key problem areas. Together, they are working to develop safer infrastructure around schools in coordination with relevant departments.

The schools included in Phase One are: Govt Primary School Badhshapur, Govt Senior Secondary School Dunela, Govt Secondary School Budhera, Govt Secondary School Kadipur, Govt Secondary School Harsuru, Govt Secondary School Bhondsi, Govt Secondary School Sukhrali, Govt Secondary School Bhimnagar, Amity International School (Sector 46), and The Shri Ram School (Aravali).

Addressing Specific Safety Recommendations

The traffic police survey made several critical recommendations to mitigate risks:

  1. Install marked pedestrian crossings, kerb stones, and pedestrian railings
  2. Create well-marked bays for school buses, auto-rickshaws, and private vehicles
  3. Implement rumble strips and speed limit signs
  4. Ensure designated drop-off and pick-up bays to reduce conflicts

Currently, unregulated parking and the absence of such facilities lead to vehicles stopping randomly near school gates. This obstructs visibility for children crossing and causes congestion, directly increasing accident risks during peak hours.

As per Indian Road Congress (IRC) guidelines, separate, well-marked bays are essential to minimize conflicts and ensure smooth circulation. The absence of hazard sign markers and word messages like "Slow" or "School Ahead" further exacerbates vulnerabilities in these zones.

This proactive initiative by the Gurgaon administration marks a crucial step towards safeguarding young commuters, with potential for broader implementation across the city based on initial outcomes.
