Gujarat Government Disburses Rs 1.43 Crore to Cattle Owners for Wildlife Attacks in Gir Region
In a significant move to support rural livelihoods, the Gujarat government has provided compensation totaling Rs 1.43 crore to 1,966 cattle owners in the Gir area of Amreli district. This financial aid was granted for cattle losses caused by attacks from lions, leopards, and other wild animals, as officially disclosed in the state assembly on Wednesday.
Compensation Details and Yearly Trends
Forest Minister Arjun Modhwadia presented the detailed figures while responding to a query raised by Savarkundla MLA Mahesh Kaswala. The compensation was specifically allocated to owners who suffered losses due to wildlife incidents in the Gir region, an area notorious for frequent encounters between livestock and predators like lions and leopards.
According to the data shared:
- In 2023: A total of 920 cattle owners received compensation amounting to Rs 67.91 lakh.
- In 2025: The number increased to 965 cattle owners, who were paid Rs 69.40 lakh, reflecting a 4.9% rise compared to the previous year.
- January 2025 alone: Compensation of Rs 5.50 lakh was disbursed to 81 cattle owners.
Government Compensation Norms and Policy Framework
The Gujarat government has established clear compensation norms to address such incidents. In cases where cows or buffaloes are killed by wild animal attacks, the maximum payment is set at Rs 50,000 per animal. For camel deaths caused by similar wildlife encounters, the compensation cap is Rs 40,000. This structured approach aims to mitigate the economic impact on cattle owners and promote coexistence with wildlife in the ecologically sensitive Gir forest area.
The increase in compensation cases from 2023 to 2025 highlights the ongoing challenges faced by livestock owners in regions with high wildlife activity. The government's proactive measures underscore its commitment to balancing conservation efforts with the welfare of local communities dependent on cattle rearing.
