Greater Noida Launches Major Initiative to Formalize Street Vending and Reduce Encroachments
In a significant move to address persistent civic issues, the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA) has announced the allocation of 673 designated vending spaces under its newly implemented street vendor policy. This strategic effort aims to curb roadside encroachments that have long plagued the city, improving pedestrian safety and traffic management.
Detailed Sector-Wise Distribution of Vending Zones
The vending zones have been meticulously identified across multiple sectors to balance demand and footfall in both residential and commercial areas. The highest concentration of slots is in Pi-1 and Pi-2, with 160 spaces allocated, followed by Omicron-3 with 86 spaces. Beta-1 and Delta-1 each receive 75 spaces, while other sectors include Xu-2 (70), Alpha-2 (47), Xu-3 (45), Omicron-1A (39), Gamma-2 (37), and Delta-3 (34). Beta-2 has the lowest allocation with just five spaces, ensuring a tailored approach to local needs.
Application Process and Inclusive Reservation Framework
Interested individuals can apply for these vending spaces from April 20 to May 4, providing an opportunity for formalized street vending. The policy incorporates a robust reservation system to promote inclusivity: 50% of the total 673 spaces are reserved for women vendors, 5% are earmarked for physically handicapped individuals, and 33% are allocated to landless labourers from the Greater Noida area. This framework aims to support marginalized groups while addressing urban planning challenges.
Rental Structure Designed to Encourage Compliance
To facilitate vendor participation and discourage unauthorized vending, GNIDA has established moderate rental slabs based on unit size and type. For kiosks up to 4 square meters, the monthly rent is fixed at Rs 3,850, while larger kiosks above 4 sqm will cost Rs 6,050 per month. Stationary vendors occupying up to 5 sqm will pay Rs 2,200 monthly, with larger spaces at Rs 3,300. Mobile vendors, regardless of size, are charged a flat rate of Rs 1,650 per month. This pricing strategy is intended to make compliance affordable and attractive.
Expected Benefits and Civic Improvements
Officials highlight that this initiative is expected to significantly reduce encroachments on roads and footpaths, a chronic issue in Greater Noida. By relocating vendors into planned zones, the authority aims to enhance pedestrian movement, streamline traffic flow, and formalize the informal sector. This proactive measure not only addresses immediate civic concerns but also fosters a more organized and sustainable urban environment for all residents and businesses.
