Government Issues Directive to States to Tackle Fuel Misinformation and LPG Hoarding
In a significant move to maintain public order and ensure resource stability, the central government has issued a formal directive to all states and Union territories. The instruction focuses on curbing the spread of misinformation regarding the availability of essential fuels and preventing illegal activities related to LPG cylinders.
Key Measures Outlined in Official Communication
Petroleum Secretary Neeraj Mittal communicated this directive through a letter addressed to the chief secretaries of all states and Union territories on Thursday. The letter emphasizes the urgent need for state administrations to implement robust measures against the circulation of false information about petrol, diesel, and gas supplies.
The government has specifically called for actions to prevent black marketing and hoarding of LPG cylinders, which have been identified as critical issues affecting distribution networks. This step aims to safeguard consumers from exploitation and ensure equitable access to these vital resources.
Addressing Public Panic Through Proactive Communication
Secretary Mittal highlighted that persistent rumours in certain regions have led to instances of panic buying, disrupting normal supply chains. To counteract this, the directive urges state and Union territory governments to intensify their public communication efforts.
"States and Union Territory governments are requested to intensify proactive and regular public communication to assure citizens of adequate availability and smooth distribution of LPG cylinders," Mittal stated in the letter. This approach is designed to build public confidence and prevent unnecessary stockpiling driven by fear.
Expected Outcomes and Implementation Focus
The government's directive outlines several expected outcomes from this initiative:
- Reduction in the spread of false information about fuel availability.
- Enhanced monitoring and enforcement against black marketing of LPG cylinders.
- Improved public awareness through regular updates on supply status.
- Stabilization of distribution networks to prevent hoarding-related shortages.
By mandating these measures, the Centre aims to foster a more transparent and reliable system for fuel distribution across the country. The success of this initiative will depend on coordinated efforts between central and state authorities to address misinformation at its source and enforce regulations effectively.
