Government Firmly Denies False Reports on LPG Refill Booking Timeline Changes
In a decisive move to counter widespread misinformation, the Government of India on Wednesday categorically dismissed reports suggesting any alteration to LPG refill booking timelines. The Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas issued a clear statement asserting that the information circulating on social media platforms is incorrect and misleading, with the existing timelines remaining completely unchanged.
Official Clarification on Booking Intervals
The ministry specifically addressed false claims regarding revised booking intervals, which had suggested:
- 45 days for PMUY (Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana) connections
- 25 days for single non-PMUY connections
- 35 days for double cylinder non-PMUY connections
"These suggested intervals have absolutely no basis in reality," the ministry emphasized. "No such changes have been implemented. The existing refill booking timelines continue unchanged under the current system."
Actual LPG Refill Booking Structure
The government reaffirmed the uniform booking structure that has been in place:
- 25 days in urban areas
- 45 days in rural areas
This structure applies irrespective of connection type, whether PMUY or non-PMUY, single or double cylinder.
Government's Strong Warning Against Misinformation
The ministry issued a stern advisory to citizens, urging them not to believe or circulate such misinformation and to avoid unnecessary or panic-driven LPG refill bookings. "It is reiterated that adequate LPG stocks are available across the country, and there is absolutely no cause for concern," the statement added.
Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) echoed this clarification, stating unequivocally that "reports claiming changes in LPG refill booking timelines are incorrect." The oil marketing giant confirmed that "there is no change in the existing timelines (25 days in urban areas / 45 days in rural areas), and LPG supplies remain adequate throughout the nation."
Fuel Supply Context Amid Global Tensions
These clarifications come against the backdrop of rising concerns about fuel supply and pricing as tensions persist in the Middle East region. Earlier this week, Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, provided comprehensive reassurance about India's fuel security.
"All refineries are operating at high capacity with adequate crude inventories," Sharma stated. "We maintain sufficient stocks of petrol, diesel, and have stepped up domestic LPG production in our refineries."
Addressing Misinformation and Enforcement Actions
Sharma acknowledged that isolated instances of misinformation had created confusion in certain areas, leading to panic buying. "Such rumors came to our notice and were promptly addressed," she confirmed.
The government has taken concrete enforcement measures:
- Approximately 1,500 surprise inspections conducted by oil marketing companies
- 642 FIRs filed against violators
- 155 individuals arrested
- Show-cause notices issued to about 250 distributors
- Some distributors suspended pending investigation
Infrastructure Expansion and Future Planning
Highlighting infrastructure development, Sharma revealed that around 7,500 domestic and commercial PNG connections were provided in a single day across 110 geographical areas. She noted that approximately "60 lakh households where PNG connection can be provided" have been identified, encouraging eligible users to adopt PNG connections at the earliest opportunity.
Final Reassurance on Fuel Availability
Concluding her remarks, Sharma delivered a firm reassurance: "I reiterate my request to everyone not to believe in rumors. We have sufficient stocks available. There is adequate supply of petrol and diesel across the country."
The government's comprehensive response aims to quell unnecessary panic while maintaining transparency about India's robust fuel supply chain and enforcement mechanisms against misinformation.
