The Public Works Department (PWD) of Goa has taken a significant step forward in addressing critical infrastructure needs by submitting a detailed project report (DPR) to the Central government for the construction of a new "high-level" Borim bridge across the Zuari river. This ambitious project carries a substantial project estimate of Rs 1,948 crore, marking a major investment in the state's transportation network.

Project Details and Funding

The proposed bridge will be a four-laned, cable-stayed structure covering an impressive total length of 8 kilometers, which includes approach roads along National Highway 566. The entire project will be funded by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, highlighting the national importance of this infrastructure development. This represents a dramatic sixfold increase from earlier estimates of approximately Rs 300 crore for a 6km bridge, reflecting both expanded scope and updated cost calculations.

Land Acquisition and Timeline

Preparatory work for the new Borim bridge has been underway, with the government successfully finalizing land acquisition last year. Approximately 3.5 lakh square meters of land has been acquired across several villages including Loutolim, Borim, Bandora, and Queula. Once construction begins, the project is expected to take around three years to complete, potentially transforming regional connectivity upon its completion.

Current Bridge Condition and Maintenance

The existing Borim bridge, which was commissioned in 1986, has faced significant challenges over the years. Within just a few years of operation, it developed structural problems that have necessitated periodic closures for maintenance and load capacity testing. This bridge serves as a vital link between Ponda and Salcete talukas for heavy vehicular traffic moving through Goa on NH 566. However, due to its weakened condition, much of this traffic has had to be diverted to alternative routes.

While plans for the new bridge progress, strengthening and rehabilitation work continues on the existing structure. The Central government is providing Rs 20.7 crore for necessary repairs. Previous maintenance work included pre-stressing carried out by Freyssinet India Ltd, Mumbai, which was completed in December 2016 at a cost of Rs 9.9 crore.

Structural Challenges and Historical Context

The existing 431-meter-long Borim bridge, constructed between 1977 and 1986 for Rs 303 lakh, faces particular challenges due to Goa's environmental conditions. The steel components suffer from corrosion caused by the high salinity of Goan rivers, leading to loss of tensile strength over time. After conducting a study through a consultancy firm, authorities have implemented cable tightening measures to strengthen the aging structure.

This comprehensive approach—combining immediate repairs to the existing bridge with long-term planning for a modern replacement—demonstrates a strategic response to Goa's evolving infrastructure requirements and the pressing need for reliable river crossings in the region.
