Goa's Hodor Locality Receives Tanker Water Supply Following Resident Protests
In response to escalating tensions over chronic water supply disruptions, the Public Works Department (PWD) in Goa has initiated emergency tanker services to deliver water to affected households in the Bamangal area of Hodor, Curchorem. This intervention comes just days after frustrated residents staged a stormy protest at the local PWD office, demanding immediate action to address their month-long plight.
Temporary Relief for 20 Families Amid Pipeline Woes
The tanker supply offers a crucial, albeit temporary, respite to approximately 20 families residing at higher elevations in Hodor. These households have endured dry taps for over a month, severely impacting their daily lives and prompting the recent outcry. PWD officials have clarified that the existing pipeline serving this elevated locality is fundamentally inadequate for modern needs.
The core issue, as explained by authorities, is an antiquated and undersized pipeline that cannot sustain sufficient water pressure. Whenever attempts are made to increase pressure to service the higher areas, the old pipes are prone to frequent bursts, rendering consistent piped supply currently unviable. This technical limitation has forced the department to seek stopgap measures while planning a more durable fix.
Long-Term Solution Proposed After Heated Confrontation
The development follows a heated confrontation earlier this week, where residents of Hodor descended upon the PWD office, accusing the department of inaction despite repeated complaints. Residents reported that water supply would briefly resume following their grievances, only to fail again within a day or two, highlighting the systemic nature of the problem.
In light of these protests and the identified infrastructure failure, the PWD has taken a significant step forward. Officials have confirmed that a formal proposal has been submitted to the government for laying a new, robust pipeline. This project aims to ensure a long-term and reliable water supply for the Bamangal locality, moving beyond temporary tanker solutions to address the root cause of the disruptions.
The situation underscores the challenges faced by communities dependent on aging water infrastructure and the critical need for timely governmental intervention to prevent such civic crises.
