Goa Women's Gram Sabha Highlights Infrastructure Gaps on International Women's Day
In a significant gathering to commemorate International Women's Day, nearly 200 women convened for a special Mahila gram sabha on Sunday at the Poinguinim gram panchayat hall in Canacona, Goa. The event served as a platform for women to voice long-standing community concerns, with infrastructure deficiencies taking center stage.
Key Issues Raised by Women Participants
During the meeting, several women highlighted pressing local problems that have been pending for extended periods. A primary demand was the urgent asphalt coating of village roads, which participants argued should be prioritized to improve accessibility and safety. Women from Marlim–Tirval specifically called for the hot-mixing of their kucha road at the earliest opportunity.
Other infrastructure concerns included:
- Mobile Connectivity: A group from Chiplem emphasized the lack of mobile network coverage in their area, stressing that a mobile tower is essential to resolve communication challenges.
- Water Scarcity: The issue of water shortage affecting daily household activities was widely discussed, with women noting its impact on their routines and well-being.
- Walking Track Delays: Some participants raised the need for a walking track, pointing out that work at the Potkem ground is progressing at an unacceptably slow pace.
Additional Community Concerns
Beyond infrastructure, women also addressed agricultural and economic hardships. Concerns were raised about cattle damaging plantations and fields, with participants urging that compensation be provided without bureaucratic hurdles. This issue underscores the broader challenges faced by rural communities in protecting their livelihoods.

Panchayat authorities responded positively to the demands, assuring attendees that necessary procedures would be initiated to address the raised issues. Canacona MLA and Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar attended the event, delivering a powerful message on women's empowerment.
He stated, "Women's labour keeps households functioning, communities stable, and the nation's workforce ready to participate in the formal economy." Tawadkar added that true empowerment involves not only enabling women to succeed within existing systems but also questioning structures that overlook essential forms of work. His remarks highlighted the critical role women play in societal and economic stability.
