In a significant address during the appointment ceremony for new recruits in Goa's accounts department, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant emphasized the importance of integrating corporate sector innovation into government service. The event, held in Panaji on Wednesday, saw the CM personally handing over letters of appointment to 21 individuals who were selected through the rigorous Staff Selection Commission process.
Blending Corporate Efficiency with Public Service
Addressing the new employees, many of whom had previous experience in the private sector, CM Sawant highlighted a unique opportunity. "You were selected on a merit basis. You should also deliver services to match that merit," he stated, encouraging them to leverage their corporate background. "Many may have worked in the private sector before being appointed to this government job. See how you can bring the same practices and innovation here as in the corporate sector. The work should be carried out as promptly as in corporate service," the chief minister elaborated, setting clear expectations for performance and efficiency.
Timely Recruitment and Training
Sawant acknowledged the efforts of the Staff Selection Commission in conducting recruitments in a timely manner. He informed the recruits that they would soon receive their postings and undergo training. "You will complete training in a few days. You should make sure that you understand government service rules," he advised, stressing the importance of familiarizing themselves with official protocols and regulations.
Servant Leadership Over Arrogance
In a crucial reminder about the ethos of public service, the CM cautioned against arrogance. "Once you sit on the chair, you should not become arrogant. At times, you can tend to feel like you are a big officer sitting on a chair. You are not an officer; you are a servant, and you are there to serve the people," he told the new employees, who were present with their families. This message reinforced the fundamental principle that government roles are about service rather than authority.
Chief Secretary's Expectations
Goa Chief Secretary V Candavelou, who was also present at the ceremony, echoed similar sentiments. He reminded the recruits of the transparent and merit-based selection process they had undergone. "You came through a rigorous, transparent, merit-based recruitment system. So the government is expecting a lot from you," he said, outlining their responsibilities. "You should discharge your duties in the public interest. You will be the eyes and ears. You will be the watchdog on the financial side," Candavelou added, emphasizing their critical role in ensuring financial integrity and public trust.
The ceremony not only marked the formal induction of new talent into Goa's accounts department but also set a forward-looking tone. By encouraging the infusion of corporate practices, the leadership aims to enhance efficiency and innovation in government operations, ultimately benefiting public service delivery in the state.
