GMDA Unveils Rs 1.5 Crore Plan to Ease Traffic at Gurgaon's Cyber Park Intersection
The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is actively developing a comprehensive strategy to alleviate severe traffic congestion at a critical intersection near Unitech Cyber Park on Netaji Subhash Marg. This key junction, which serves as a vital link between Millennium City Centre and Subhash Chowk, is poised for a significant transformation aimed at improving vehicular and pedestrian flow in one of Gurgaon's most bustling areas.
Addressing a Major Traffic Bottleneck
The intersection, which also connects Jharsa and Sector 45, has long been a pressure point for commuters due to the high concentration of IT parks and office complexes in its vicinity. During peak office hours, vehicles from multiple directions converge at the signalised crossing, leading to extensive queues and delays. The situation has deteriorated in recent months as ongoing metro construction has reduced the effective carriageway space, exacerbating congestion and frustration among daily travelers.
Key Components of the Decongestion Plan
With an estimated budget of Rs 1.5 crore, GMDA is preparing to float a tender soon for this ambitious project. The proposal includes several innovative measures designed to streamline traffic movement:
- Introduction of slip lanes to facilitate free left turns, reducing unnecessary stoppages at signals.
- Redesign of ingress and egress points to minimize delays caused by vehicles entering or exiting the main carriageway.
- Enhancement of pedestrian infrastructure through improved footpath connectivity around the junction, ensuring safer and more convenient movement for walkers.
- Better traffic channelisation and circulation management to optimize vehicular flow and reduce congestion.
A senior GMDA official emphasized the project's focus, stating, "We are working on improving traffic flow at the Cyber Park intersection, which sees congestion owing to high office traffic. The idea is to streamline movement through better channelisation. We will also enhance footpath connectivity to ensure safer and more convenient movement for pedestrians in and around the junction."
Strategic Importance and Long-Term Vision
Located between major office hubs and residential sectors, this intersection handles traffic from multiple directions, including Jharsa, Sector 45, and Millennium City Centre. The official highlighted its critical role, noting that improving this junction is essential for ensuring smoother traffic flow along the entire Netaji Subhash Marg corridor. "This is one of the key junctions on this stretch. While a flyover is already operational at Subhash Chowk and a grade separator has been proposed at Bakhtawar Chowk, we have now taken up the improvement of the Cyber Park intersection. This will help streamline traffic movement across the corridor," the official added.
Resident Perspectives and Future Needs
While local residents have welcomed GMDA's initiative, some express concerns that the proposed measures may offer only partial relief. Puneet Pahwa, general secretary of Sector 45, pointed out the persistent challenges: "This intersection is heavily congested throughout the day. Signal timings are short and vehicles heading towards Subhash Chowk or Sector 45 often have to wait through multiple cycles. The problem has intensified due to metro construction, which has reduced road space. Autos and other vehicles frequently occupy the cycling track, further worsening the situation."
Pahwa also suggested that more long-term interventions might be necessary, stating, "With traffic approaching from multiple sides, the junction has become a major bottleneck. Slip lanes may provide some relief, but considering the volume of traffic, a grade separator like an underpass is ultimately needed for seamless movement."
As GMDA moves forward with this project, the authority aims to not only decongest the immediate area but also set a precedent for future infrastructure improvements in Gurgaon's rapidly evolving urban landscape.
