Ghaziabad Residents Demand Urgent Action on Dirty Drains and Sanitation Issues
Residents in Shalimar Garden, Ghaziabad, have voiced escalating concerns regarding dirty drains, inadequate sanitation, delays in clearing excavated waste, and rampant garbage dumping. In a formal letter addressed to the chief health officer of the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation (GMC), they have called for prompt measures to address these pressing civic problems.
Comprehensive Cleaning Requested by Residents
Pradeep Gupta, a resident and founding member of the public welfare committee Shalimar Garden Jan Kalyan Samiti (SGJKS), highlighted the dire situation in the communication. He emphasized that numerous major drains and internal sewers are severely clogged with filth, silt, and debris. Despite the municipal corporation launching a special drive to clean the drains, Gupta pointed out that the slow pace and substandard, incomplete work have fueled frustration among the local populace.
At multiple locations, the stagnant dirty water in these drains emits foul odors, exacerbating the sanitation crisis and creating an unhealthy environment for the community.
Key Issues Identified by the Community
The residents have outlined several critical issues in their appeal:
- Inadequate cleaning of drains, with many receiving only superficial attention rather than thorough maintenance.
- Delay in removal of excavated waste, leading to materials sliding back into the drains and negating cleaning efforts.
- Insufficient and irregular cleaning of drains in internal lanes and bylanes, leaving these areas neglected.
- Obstruction of drainage systems caused by encroachments and indiscriminate dumping of waste, which blocks proper flow.
Gupta's letter stresses the necessity for immediate action to ensure all major and minor drains in Shalimar Garden are comprehensively cleaned. He also underscored the importance of regular monitoring and holding officials accountable for their responsibilities in these operations.
Monsoon Waterlogging Fears Prompt Calls for Priority Action
Expressing deep apprehension, Gupta noted that residents are particularly worried about the potential for severe waterlogging during the upcoming monsoon season. He urged the municipal corporation to prioritize this issue to safeguard the safety and comfort of the community, preventing health hazards and inconvenience.
Another resident, Anurag Singh, echoed these sentiments, advocating for officials to identify and prioritize vulnerable areas. He suggested collaboration with Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) to gather feedback on ongoing efforts, stating that timely intervention would significantly reduce the risk of waterlogging during the rains, offering much-needed relief to the area's inhabitants.
Municipal Corporation's Response
When contacted, GMC officials acknowledged the concerns and stated that they are taking necessary steps to address the issue. However, residents remain vigilant, calling for more decisive and efficient actions to resolve the sanitation and drainage problems plaguing Shalimar Garden.
