BMRCL Introduces Free Bicycle Parking at Nine Metro Stations in Bengaluru

In a significant move to encourage cycling as a sustainable last-mile transportation option, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) has announced free bicycle parking at nine strategically selected metro stations across the city. This initiative aims to reduce dependency on motorized transport and promote eco-friendly commuting alternatives for daily commuters.

Strategic Selection of Stations for Maximum Impact

The waiver applies to two stations on the Purple Line, three on the Green Line, and four on the newly commissioned Yellow Line. These locations were specifically chosen based on usage patterns identified by BMRCL's connectivity team. "Our connectivity team identified these stations as the ones most frequently used by cyclists, which is why they have been chosen for free bicycle parking," explained a BMRCL official. The official clarified that parking charges will continue at all other stations, with the current rate being Rs 1 per hour and a maximum daily fee of Rs 10.

The decision was formalized through a recent tender floated by BMRCL for operating parking facilities. Bids are being accepted until February 9, after which the agency plans to finalize an operator to manage these facilities efficiently.

Cyclists Welcome Initiative but Highlight Infrastructure Gaps

While BMRCL believes this move sends a positive signal to commuters, cycling advocates emphasize that improving physical infrastructure at metro stations is equally crucial. "I don't mind paying even Rs 10 to park my bicycle; it's not about the fee," said Sathya Sankaran, popularly known as Bengaluru's bicycle mayor. "Except for a few stations, there is no dedicated space for bicycles, and at many places cyclists are shooed away. Providing proper parking facilities at all stations is the real way to promote cycling as a last-mile option."

Another regular cyclist, Biju Cherayath, welcomed the initiative but pointed out the lack of basic infrastructure such as anchoring points. "Most cyclists don't mind paying as long as their bicycles are secure," he noted. "At several stations, there is no pole or bar to lock the cycle. Even simple support structures would make a big difference."

List of Stations with Free Bicycle Parking

  • Purple Line: Mysuru Road, Byappanahalli
  • Green Line: Madawara, Peenya Industry, JP Nagar
  • Yellow Line: BTM Layout, Electronics City, Ragigudda, Jayadeva Hospital

This initiative represents a step forward in Bengaluru's efforts to integrate cycling with public transit, though challenges remain in ensuring adequate infrastructure to support growing cyclist numbers. The city continues to explore ways to enhance sustainable mobility options for its residents.
