Rashid Khan Silences Doubters with Match-Winning Performance
Champions possess an uncanny ability to defy expectations, and Rashid Khan delivered a powerful reminder of this truth at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday night. In a high-scoring thriller, the Afghan leg-spinner produced a spell of vintage quality, guiding Gujarat Titans to a narrow one-run victory over Delhi Capitals. This performance not only secured a crucial win but also emphatically addressed the swirling doubts about his recent form.
A Period of Struggle and Questions
For some time, speculation had mounted around Rashid Khan's effectiveness. Critics suggested he was on the decline, with batters having seemingly decoded his variations. These concerns were not unfounded, given his modest returns over the past two IPL seasons. Last year, he managed only nine wickets from 15 matches at an average of 57.1, a stark contrast to his earlier dominance built on control, menace, and certainty.
In a candid post-match interaction, Rashid interrupted a question about the previous season, stating, "Don't remind me yaar, it was very bad." He revealed that his struggles were linked to a back surgery he had delayed to participate in the 2023 ODI World Cup. "I think I pushed myself a lot in that World Cup and after that, it was really bad. I was not able to walk after the tournament," he explained, making his latest effort even more remarkable.
Masterclass on a Batting-Friendly Pitch
On a surface offering minimal assistance to bowlers, Rashid emerged as the game-changer, breaking the flow of Delhi Capitals' chase. He finished with exceptional figures of 3/17 from four overs, halting the opposition just as momentum was building. Introduced in the fifth over, he immediately hinted at his touch by beating KL Rahul with a leg-break that drifted in and spun away sharply.
The match turned decisively in his third over. Nitish Rana misread a wrong 'un and miscued to Sai Sudharsan at long-off. The very next ball was a masterpiece—a googly that completely deceived Sameer Rizvi, bowling him for a golden duck. Rashid later removed Axar Patel, leaving Capitals off balance in a chase they had previously controlled.
Reflecting on the delivery to Rizvi, Rashid said, "After long, I got such a wicket. As a leg-spinner, you want that kind of delivery, where you beat the batter. I'm quite happy, it gave me so much confidence. I feel in the last two games, I bowled well."
Road to Recovery and Improved Fitness
Rashid credited his resurgence to improved fitness and recovery from surgery. He noted that the procedure had affected his bowling action and release, prompting introspection after a disappointing 2025 season. "I thought, 'Ok, what's wrong now?' I felt like it was the whole rhythm, from starting to the finishing," he shared.
To address this, he dedicated time post-IPL, including a stint in The Hundred competition in the UK, focusing intensely on his physical condition. "I gave myself a couple of months after the last IPL. I focused on my fitness. That's something which I can improve and allows my body to bowl with full rhythm," he emphasized, highlighting the importance of holistic preparation.
Future Plans and Test Cricket Considerations
Looking ahead, Rashid addressed his participation in Test cricket, with Afghanistan scheduled to play a one-off Test against India in early June. He expressed caution, citing medical advice post-surgery. "Red-ball looks a bit difficult for me. The first thing my doctor told me was to stay away from it. I still bowled 67 overs against Zimbabwe, which was crazy! I'll just take it easy. Imagine something happens to my back in a Test," he stated, prioritizing long-term health over immediate commitments.
This victory not only boosts Gujarat Titans' campaign but also reaffirms Rashid Khan's status as a premier spinner, capable of turning games single-handedly when fully fit and in rhythm.
