DMRC Proposes Multilevel Parking Facilities at Two Key Metro Stations
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has unveiled plans to develop multilevel car parking facilities at two of its busiest stations in the National Capital Region. The proposed infrastructure will be constructed at Guru Dronacharya Metro Station and IFFCO Chowk Metro Station to address the escalating parking demands from daily commuters.
Public-Private Partnership Model for Development
DMRC has formally submitted a proposal to the Haryana Shehri Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP) seeking approval to implement these parking projects under a public-private partnership (PPP) framework. This model mirrors successful parking initiatives already operational at several other Delhi Metro stations, ensuring cost-effective and efficient development.
Addressing Congestion and Parking Shortages
The primary objective of these multilevel parking complexes is to alleviate traffic congestion in the vicinity of these high-footfall metro hubs. By providing organized and structured parking solutions, DMRC aims to enhance the daily commuting experience for thousands of passengers who rely on these transit points.
Key details of the land allocation include:
- Guru Dronacharya Station: Over 2,500 square meters of land transferred by the Haryana government under a 2006 agreement for Yellow Line extension.
- IFFCO Chowk Station: Over 6,200 square meters of land, with approximately 3,900 square meters currently available for development.
Rising Demand and Proven Success Models
DMRC officials have highlighted that parking demand has increased manifold over recent years, while existing parking capacity remains severely limited. The necessity for multilevel facilities stems from the need to efficiently accommodate the growing number of commuters utilizing these stations.
The proposed parking structures are based on successful PPP models already implemented at stations such as:
- Janakpuri West Metro Station
- Rohini Metro Station
- Rajouri Garden Metro Station
In these existing projects, commercial utilization of the parking complexes has helped offset construction costs, making them financially viable.
Timeline and Current Status
This parking proposal has been under active consideration since 2025, with preliminary agreements reached in various stakeholder meetings. The plan remains subject to specific conditions, including final land clearance approvals from relevant authorities. Once approved, these multilevel parking facilities are expected to significantly improve parking accessibility and reduce vehicular clutter around these critical metro stations.
