NWKRTC Pioneers Digital Luggage Locker System at Hubballi Central Bus Station
In a significant move to enhance passenger convenience, the North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) has launched a digital luggage locker system at the Hubballi Central bus station. This initiative marks the first of its kind across all bus stations operated by NWKRTC, setting a new standard for traveler amenities in the region.
Addressing a Long-Standing Need
For several months, the central bus station's existing luggage room facility remained non-operational due to a lack of contractors willing to manage it after a tender was floated. This absence forced passengers to carry their belongings even during short-distance trips, causing considerable inconvenience. To resolve this issue, NWKRTC authorities have collaborated with a private company specializing in digital locker solutions, introducing the system as a three-month pilot project at the Gokul Road location.
How the Digital Locker System Works
Vinod Ammanagi, the depot manager in Hubballi, detailed the operational aspects of the new facility. Nineteen digitally operated lockers have been installed, available in medium, large, and extra-large sizes to accommodate various luggage types. The process is entirely automated, eliminating the need for manual assistance.
- Passengers provide their mobile number to receive a one-time password (OTP).
- They select a locker size based on their luggage and intended storage duration.
- Payment is made online, with two system options: open and keep for temporary storage or open and check out for final retrieval.
Pricing is structured at Rs 40 for medium lockers, Rs 60 for large, and Rs 90 for extra-large lockers, all for a six-hour service period.
Positive Passenger Feedback and Future Plans
Since its launch, the digital locker system has garnered widespread usage and appreciation from travelers. Many passengers have expressed relief, noting that they no longer need to haul luggage around, and have requested an expansion of the facility to more lockers and other key bus stations in the area.
H Ramangouder, divisional controller of NWKRTC in Hubballi, indicated that the corporation is monitoring the pilot closely. "If we receive a positive response, we may extend this facility to other stations," he stated. Feedback from users will be collected and reviewed in consultation with higher officials to determine the feasibility of broader implementation.
Currently, a staff member is temporarily assigned to assist passengers with the new system, but the goal is to phase out supervision as travelers become more familiar with the digital interface. This innovative step not only improves safety and convenience but also aligns with modern technological trends in public transportation services.
