Delhi's Mukarba Chowk Underpasses Near Completion to Alleviate Major Traffic Bottleneck
In a significant development for Delhi's urban infrastructure, the long-awaited underpasses at Mukarba Chowk are poised to open within days. Construction is nearly complete, with only finishing touches remaining on this critical project designed to ease one of north Delhi's most persistent traffic bottlenecks along the bustling Outer Ring Road corridor.
Three-Tunnel Design Enhances Safety and Efficiency
The project features a sophisticated three-tunnel design located near gate no. 3 of the Haiderpur Badli Mor metro station. Two of these underpasses are dedicated to vehicular movement, while the third is exclusively for pedestrians and non-motorised transport. This thoughtful configuration promises to significantly improve both traffic flow and safety for all road users.
Major Connectivity Boost for Key Neighborhoods
Once operational, these underpasses will dramatically enhance connectivity between several important areas. Residents and commuters traveling between Badli village, Rohini sectors 18 and 19, Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar, and Shalimar Bagh will benefit immensely. The new infrastructure eliminates the need for a cumbersome 1.5-kilometre detour via the congested Mukarba Chowk flyover, offering a more direct and efficient route.
Engineering Excellence for Smooth Traffic Flow
Each vehicular underpass measures approximately 50 metres in length, 9.6 metres in width, and 6 metres in height. These dimensions are carefully calculated to accommodate a wide range of vehicles, from compact cars to larger commercial trucks. The construction employed advanced jack pushing technology and precast RCC boxes, methodologies specifically chosen to minimise disruption during the building phase and ensure long-term structural integrity.
Substantial Traffic Handling Capacity
Transport officials project that nearly 15,800 vehicles will utilize these underpasses daily. This substantial capacity is expected to significantly ease pressure on the existing interchange and flyover, particularly during peak hours when traffic congestion frequently spills over onto surrounding roads, creating gridlock and delays.
Environmental Benefits and Pedestrian Safety
The project delivers notable environmental advantages alongside its traffic solutions. Estimates suggest it could save approximately 58,000 litres of fuel annually and reduce carbon emissions by an impressive 135 tonnes. Furthermore, the dedicated pedestrian underpass will provide a safe crossing for metro users traveling between Outer Ring Road, Shalimar Bagh, and Azadpur Mandi, addressing a critical safety concern.
Reduced Travel Time and Distance for Commuters
For daily commuters who currently endure heavy congestion at Mukarba Chowk, the new corridor offers tangible improvements. It is anticipated to cut travel time by up to 10 minutes per trip and reduce the distance traveled by nearly one kilometre.
