Delhi's First Double-Decker Metro Viaduct Set for Year-End Completion
New Delhi is on the verge of unveiling its inaugural double-decker viaduct, a significant infrastructure milestone for the capital's transit system. The 1.4-kilometer structure, strategically positioned between Bhajanpura and Yamuna Vihar on the Pink Line, is projected to be fully operational by the conclusion of this year.
DMRC Initiates Final Construction Phase
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has officially commenced the final leg of construction by floating tenders for the development of ramps on both sides of the viaduct. This crucial step, previously delayed due to pending tree-felling permissions, will facilitate seamless road traffic integration beneath the elevated structure.
Anuj Dayal, Principal Executive Director of Corporate Communications at DMRC, provided detailed insights: "DMRC has initiated the process to complete the double-decker flyover at Bhajanpura on the Majlis Park-Maujpur corridor. We have floated two critical tenders—one for constructing flyover ramps at Yamuna Vihar and Bhajanpura, and another for launching three spans. Construction will commence immediately after tender finalization, with an anticipated completion timeline by year-end."
Project Specifications and Financial Details
According to official tender documents, the contract valued at Rs 11.7 crore encompasses comprehensive balance work including reinforced earth structures, retaining walls, and the construction of dual ramps. The project timeline mandates completion within six months of contract award, ensuring swift execution.
Notably, metro trains have already commenced operations on the upper deck of this innovative structure following the inauguration of the Majlis Park–Maujpur-Babarpur corridor on March 8. This unique configuration will see vehicles utilizing the lower deck while metro trains operate simultaneously on the upper level, optimizing urban space utilization.
Expanding Double-Decker Infrastructure Across Delhi
This pioneering viaduct represents just the beginning of Delhi's multi-level transit revolution. Two additional double-decker structures are currently under development across the city:
- Azadpur to Ashok Vihar: A 2.2-kilometer viaduct on the Janakpuri West–RK Ashram Marg corridor (Magenta Line extension), expected to become operational this year
- Sangam Vihar to Ambedkar Nagar: The longest at 2.4 kilometers, forming part of the 23.622-kilometer Tughlakabad–Aerocity corridor, also known as the upcoming Golden Line
Delhi Metro's Expanding Network
DMRC's extensive network currently spans 416 kilometers with 303 stations, incorporating the Noida–Greater Noida Aqua Line and Rapid Metro Gurugram. The organization is actively progressing with five new corridors under Phase IV expansion, alongside three recently approved extensions:
- RK Ashram Marg to Indraprastha (Magenta Line extension)
- Tughlakabad to Kalindi Kunj
- Aerocity to Terminal 1 (Golden Line extensions)
This comprehensive expansion strategy underscores Delhi Metro's commitment to enhancing urban mobility through innovative engineering solutions and strategic infrastructure development, positioning the capital as a leader in sustainable urban transportation.
