Delhi PWD Unveils Major Road Strengthening Initiative Worth Rs 626.8 Crore

New Delhi: For residents weary of navigating pothole-ridden and uneven roads during their daily commutes, a significant relief effort is now underway. As the new financial year commences, the Public Works Department (PWD) has launched an extensive road strengthening plan across the capital city, aimed at enhancing ride quality and addressing persistent maintenance challenges.

Substantial Financial Allocation for Key Corridors

Projects totaling Rs 626.8 crore have been approved for rollout, targeting critical corridors in east, south, and north Delhi. The allocation is strategically based on both traffic volume and the current condition of the roads. Specifically, Rs 143.1 crore has been designated for east Delhi, Rs 256.5 crore for south Delhi, and Rs 227.2 crore for north Delhi. Bids have already been called, signaling the start of this ambitious initiative.

South Delhi: Focus on Arterial and Local Routes

South Delhi, which experiences a blend of heavy arterial traffic and dense local movement, will see upgrades on several prominent stretches. Key roads include:

  • West End Marg
  • 100 Foota Road in Chhatarpur
  • SSN Marg
  • Gadaipur Bandh Road
  • Mandi Road

Additional routes such as Apeejay School Road, the main road in Sector-1 of Pushp Vihar, Mandir Marg in Panchsheel Enclave, and the service road along C V Raman Road are also part of the plan. Important infrastructure links like the Defence Colony flyover service road, Barapullah Elevated Road Phase I from JLN Stadium to Sarai Kale Khan, and the Nehru Place flyover on the Outer Ring Road will receive attention to ensure smoother connectivity.

North Delhi: Enhancing Critical Connectors

In north Delhi, the focus will be on vital stretches that serve as crucial connectors, often burdened with heavy vehicular movement. These include:

  • The road connecting Outer Ring Road at Bhera Enclave to Sai Baba Mandir in Paschim Vihar
  • The Zakhira flyover
  • Roads along the Yamuna canal

These upgrades aim to alleviate traffic bottlenecks and improve overall road safety in the region.

East Delhi: Targeting Busy Mayur Vihar Areas

The work in east Delhi will concentrate on the bustling stretches around Mayur Vihar, which carry substantial daily traffic. Included in the plan are:

  • The Mayur Vihar flyover and its ramps
  • The service road
  • Pushta Road
  • The NH-24 to Akshardham flyover loop

These improvements are expected to significantly enhance commute efficiency in this densely populated area.

Advanced Survey and Customized Repair Strategies

The scope of this initiative extends beyond routine resurfacing. A detailed pavement condition survey will be conducted using a Network Survey Vehicle (NSV) to capture real-time data on road roughness, cracks, potholes, rutting, and other surface distresses. Based on these findings, each stretch will receive tailored treatment rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

Repair strategies will vary accordingly:

  • Smaller potholes and surface defects will be addressed through mechanized repair.
  • Severely damaged sections will undergo conventional patchwork or full recarpeting.

Techniques such as cold milling of asphalt surfaces and maintenance of bituminous layers will be deployed to ensure longer-lasting results, reducing the need for frequent maintenance.

Timeline and Future Plans

The timeline for completion has been set at six months from the start of work. Officials have indicated that similar interventions are expected soon in central Delhi, New Delhi, and Shahdara, as part of a broader effort to improve the city's road infrastructure comprehensively.

This road strengthening plan represents a proactive step by the PWD to enhance the daily commuting experience for Delhi residents, focusing on durability, safety, and overall ride quality.
