Delhi Metro Embarks on Major Mid-Life Refurbishment of 70 Trains

New Delhi: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has announced a significant initiative to refurbish 70 trains operating on the Red and Blue Lines. This comprehensive mid-life upgrade aims to enhance passenger safety, comfort, and the overall travel experience by modernizing aging rolling stock.

Phased Refurbishment Plan for Aging Trains

The trains targeted for refurbishment were inducted between 2002 and 2007, having served for nearly 19 to 24 years. According to Anuj Dayal, Principal Executive Director of Corporate Communications at DMRC, the upgrade is being conducted in a phased manner to minimize disruption. So far, 31 trains have been retrofitted with advanced features.

Phase Breakdown:

  • First Phase: 12 trains upgraded.
  • Second Phase: 18 trains refurbished.
  • Third Phase: Work on 9 trains will begin soon, with 22 Blue Line trains slated for completion by November 2027.

Vikas Kumar, Managing Director of DMRC, recently inspected the first refurbished train of the third phase before its induction into passenger service, underscoring the project's importance.

Comprehensive Upgrades to Interiors and Systems

The refurbishment involves extensive improvements to both train interiors and operational systems. Interiors, including passenger sections and driver cabins, have been repainted to restore aesthetics and address wear and tear from years of use. Electrical panels have been upgraded to boost performance and reliability.

Key installations include:

  • Enhanced passenger announcement and information systems.
  • CCTV systems for improved security.
  • LCD-based dynamic route maps and display screens.

"These systems provide real-time information on routes, current time, and expected train arrivals at stations," Dayal explained. "They also facilitate communication between passengers and train operators during emergencies."

Focus on Passenger Safety and Modern Amenities

Safety enhancements are a cornerstone of the refurbishment. A new fire detection system, equipped with smoke and heat detectors, has been installed in all coaches. Additionally, old relays and miniature circuit breakers (MCBs) have been replaced with advanced units to improve safety and ensure smooth operations.

Passenger comfort has also been prioritized, with mobile- and laptop-charging points introduced in all refurbished coaches, catering to the needs of modern commuters.

Historical Context of Delhi Metro Lines

The Red Line's first section, from Tis Hazari to Shahdara, was inaugurated on December 24, 2002, and opened to the public the following day. The Blue Line's inaugural section began operations on December 31, 2005. This refurbishment initiative aligns these early trains with the latest rolling stock standards, ensuring they continue to serve Delhi's growing metro network effectively.
