Delhi Government Launches Central Flood Control Monitoring Center Ahead of Monsoon
In a significant move to bolster Delhi's preparedness for the upcoming monsoon season, Irrigation and Flood Control Minister Parvesh Verma laid the foundation stone for a new Central Flood Control Monitoring Center on Monday. The facility is being established at the LM Bund Office Complex in Shastri Nagar and is designed to act as the primary hub for managing flood-related emergencies in the national capital.
Enhancing Real-Time Monitoring and Coordination
The new monitoring center is expected to significantly improve the government's ability to track the Yamuna River's water levels, streamline coordination among various officials and departments, and enhance the overall response mechanism during flood situations triggered by heavy rainfall and rising river levels. According to the department, the ground floor of the building will house the main flood control room, which will serve as the operational nerve center.
From this central location, engineers and officials will:
- Monitor the river and field reports in real time.
- Review developments across vulnerable areas across the city.
- Coordinate emergency responses with teams deployed on the field.
Project Details and Infrastructure
The project is estimated to cost over Rs 3.5 crore and is scheduled for completion by June 15, well ahead of the peak monsoon season. The first floor of the building will include a conference and coordination hall capable of accommodating approximately 50 people. This space will be utilized for critical review meetings, operational briefings, and coordination sessions during emergency situations.
After laying the foundation stone, Minister Parvesh Verma emphasized the Delhi government's commitment to strengthening institutional infrastructure to better equip departments for handling emergencies. He noted that during the monsoon, engineers and field teams work continuously to monitor river levels, drainage systems, and vulnerable locations throughout the city.
"The new facility will function as the nerve center, making coordination smoother and enabling quicker decision-making," Verma stated. "Preparedness and timely coordination are the most crucial elements of effective flood management."

Officials present at the event highlighted that the monitoring center will substantially improve the department's operational capacity by providing a dedicated space to strengthen the response mechanism during flood-related emergencies.
