Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Launches Amphibious Excavator for Najafgarh Drain Cleanup
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta officially launched an amphibious excavator machine on Friday, a significant procurement by the Irrigation and Flood Control department, specifically designated for the cleaning of the Najafgarh drain. The launch event took place during a ground inspection visit by Gupta to the Badusarai area, where she emphasized the critical role this initiative plays in the broader effort to achieve a cleaner Yamuna river.
Addressing Yamuna Pollution at Its Source
During her inspection, Chief Minister Gupta addressed reporters, highlighting the machine's capabilities. "These machines will speed up the removal of silt, garbage and improve the drainage system which is a step towards cleaning the Yamuna river," she stated. The Najafgarh drain is recognized as one of the largest contributors to the pollution plaguing the Yamuna, with Gupta noting that an estimated approximately 1 crore metric tonnes of silt has accumulated within it over time.
Technical Advancements in Drain Management
The introduction of the amphibious excavator represents a technological advancement in Delhi's infrastructure management. Key features and expected impacts include:
- Enhanced Efficiency: The machine is designed to operate effectively in waterlogged and challenging environments, allowing for more rapid and thorough cleaning compared to traditional methods.
- Pollution Reduction: By systematically removing silt and debris, the initiative aims to directly cut down on the pollutants entering the Yamuna from this major drain.
- Improved Drainage: Clearing the accumulated material is expected to enhance the overall drainage capacity of the Najafgarh system, potentially mitigating flood risks during heavy rainfall.
This procurement underscores the Delhi government's commitment to leveraging modern equipment to tackle long-standing environmental issues, with the Yamuna's cleanliness being a paramount objective for urban sustainability and public health.
