Dehradun's Vital Bridge Reconstruction Underway After Tragic Collapse
The Public Works Department (PWD) in Dehradun is actively reconstructing the Nanda Ki Chowki bridge over the Tons river, which was catastrophically washed away during the severe deluge of September 15-16 last year. Officials have set an ambitious target for completion by April 30, 2024.
Project Details and Funding
This critical infrastructure project, with an estimated cost exceeding Rs 16 crore, is being fully funded by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Following the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) in November 2023, physical construction commenced on January 31, 2024.
Progress and Potential Delays
Information obtained through a Right to Information (RTI) application filed by Noida-based activist Amit Gupta reveals that a Dehradun-based firm is executing the construction. However, the RTI data indicates that as of March 7, only 30% of the work had been completed. While authorities are making efforts to expedite the construction and incorporate additional safety measures to prevent future accidents, the official April 30 deadline is likely to be extended given the current pace of work.
Historical Significance and Tragic Impact
The original bridge was constructed in 1992 and was among several structures severely damaged when rivers in the valley swelled during last year's disaster. Its collapse resulted in one of the deadliest single incidents in Dehradun during that period. A tractor-trolley carrying 15 people was swept away, leading to the tragic loss of 13 lives.
The destruction of the bridge also severed crucial connectivity between Vikas Nagar and Dehradun. In response, a temporary crossing was constructed alongside the site, which remains in use today.
Community Reliance on Temporary Structure
Daily commuters report that while traffic on the temporary bridge is lighter, making journeys somewhat smoother, it remains a precarious alternative. "It was damaged within days of opening and may not be reliable during the monsoon season," noted one regular user, highlighting the community's urgent need for a permanent, safe structure.
The reconstruction of the Nanda Ki Chowki bridge is therefore not just an infrastructure project but a vital restoration of safety and connectivity for the residents of Dehradun and Vikas Nagar, following a profound tragedy.
