Chennai MRTS Ridership Skyrockets Following New Extension Line Inauguration
The passenger footfall at Chennai's Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) stations has experienced a remarkable surge in the days immediately following the official inauguration of the highly anticipated St Thomas Mount-Velachery extension line. According to data released by the Chennai division of Southern Railway, this significant uptick in ridership reflects an overwhelmingly positive public response to the newly commissioned services that began operations on March 14.
Staggering Passenger Growth at Key Stations
The statistics reveal a dramatic increase in daily commuter numbers at two pivotal stations along the new corridor. At St Thomas Mount station, the passenger count jumped from 35,270 on March 14 to an impressive 49,013 by March 16. Similarly, Velachery station witnessed an even more substantial rise, with footfall escalating from 37,993 to 69,247 over the same brief period. This robust growth underscores the immediate impact and utility of the extended rail network for Chennai's residents.
Enhanced Services to Meet Rising Demand
In response to this escalating demand, the Southern Railway division has strategically augmented its service offerings. Currently, the division is operating 43 pairs of extended Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) services between Chennai Beach and St Thomas Mount. Additionally, to ensure seamless connectivity, five pairs of shuttle services are running between Beach-Velachery and Velachery-St Thomas Mount routes. While St Thomas Mount and Puzhuthivakkam stations are fully operational and serving commuters, the Adambakkam MRTS station remains under active civil construction and is not yet open to the public.

Officials have emphasized that the new extension line has fundamentally improved rail connectivity to several key suburban and commercial areas, including Thiruvanmiyur, Perungudi, and Velachery. A official release stated, "Passengers now benefit from seamless rail connectivity, which significantly reduces travel time and decreases dependence on congested road transport, particularly during peak traffic hours."
